Justin Spencer Posted November 7, 2012 Author Posted November 7, 2012 The argument that our tax is too low, because its higher elsewhere. Is just plain silly, IMO...Other less enlightened states should be lowering their tax rates to match ours, put more money in their citizens pockets and stimulate the economy. Save money on cigs so we can buy more beer, I like your thinking Gavin. mic Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 The argument that our tax is too low, because its higher elsewhere. Is just plain silly... Gavin the argument was that high prices caused by the taxes lower the use and addiction by teens and lower use by adults. Also, the medical costs in high cost states are lower. I'm in IL, so not my vote, but just wanted to make sure the correct argument was identified.
Gavin Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Whats next? A sin tax on Diet Coke? I've never seen a skinny person drinking one.
ColdWaterFshr Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Gavin - no comparison between the health consequences of smoking and just about any other sin tax you want to mention, doesn't matter if it is double whoppers with cheese or Tito's Potato Vodka -- smoking is by far the biggest killer and biggest financial burden to all of us taxpayers. Its fine if people that want to kill themselves slowly, but they should at least pay as they go. By the way, please bring an extra pack of Marlboros for me to sponge off you on the next float.
bigredbirdfan Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Cigarette taxes are essentially a tax on the poor. I don't think that's a good tax. Besides if everyone's health is really behind these propositions then why don't they just ban them. We banned cocaine and heroin because they are bad for people. If you don't like living in a state with low priced cigarettes there is nothing precluding you from moving to a state with higher cigarette prices.

It's not like cigarettes are a necessity to live. If you can't afford something, stop buying it. Smokers will complain when we have $4/gal gas but they'll keep on buying them cigs... Besides, rich people smoke too. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Gavin Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 When it comes right down to it....I wish no new taxes on anyone and I'm glad this tax grab ballot initiative failed. Kinda of a stupid ballot initiative to begin with. State Tax rates should be set by the legislators, not by a vote of the citizens.

Neither are bigscreens and Xboxes but when I deliver food baskets they have those to. And yes you are correct rich people smoke but a disproportional amount are the poorest people. So you are taxing the poor with that tax. And why don't you believe they should just ban cigarettes?
mic Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 Hey Gavin, if I was skinny, I wouldn't need to drink diet Pepsi (I hate coffee, and DPep got me through a lot of mid shifts) Now raise the cost of burgers and fries, and I'll lose some weight.
Smalliebigs Posted November 7, 2012 Posted November 7, 2012 If you go after smokers well then you need to go after obese people and people who have contracted aids thru sexual contact, both groups put a burden on the health care system just like smokers and are lifestyle choices. No new taxes until are economy is rolling along again.....if ever will be and even then think twice. The school systems, specificly the R-7 district have been seeing increases in revenue recently and it has done nothing for the students map scores. Quit throwing money down that rat hole to pad teachers under funded pensions and put AC in all the rooms. worry about this they are just as bad as smokers to health care
