Ham Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 The hook popping trick works great. I have unfortunately had to play that game three times as the patient and about five times as the "doc". IF the hook was stuck into an eye or a blood vessel or cartiage, I'd head to a doc ASAP, but otherwise "pop" it out. Many of these misadventures have been on a float trip and I'm hours away from professional help regardless. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Justin Spencer Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Al is dead on with the string trick, we use it on campers all the time. It is easy and relatively painless, only the adults complain, kids are amazed how easy it is. Anyone who fishes should know this trick, curious as to how much the ER charged to get it out, I'll do it for half, or free if you rent boats! Quillback Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 For me the big key is to get it out ASAP using a little adrenaline to my advantage. If I wait too long I'll get queasy and might actually black out. The worst I ever had was directly under my thumbnail with a Johnson Silver minnow spoon (big gnarly hook with a big gnarly barb) and there was a pork strip attached for extra salt injection qualities. I just grabbed the spoon and ripped it out as quick as I could. It hit a nerve and there was no way in hell I could have waited even 10 seconds, much less the time it would have taken to walk back to my truck and drive somewhere. Those Johnson hooks are huge, and underneath the thumbnail! Yikes!
Terrierman Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Everybody who says the string trick would have worked on that one is correct.
ollie Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Ok, I think that dude is into pain! Good example, but I didn't think he was going to do that! Al Agnew Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Actually he wasn't the only one...I watched several videos looking for one that explains it well, and another guy did the same thing...purposely stuck a hook into himself in order to demonstrate the technique. Problem with both of them is that they picked some poor quality hooks to do it. I guarantee you that a size 4 Excalibur hook would have gone in easier. The closest I ever came to disaster was when I stuck an Excalibur into my finger through my fingernail, almost past the barb but not quite. Given the way the string trick works, I don't think it would have worked in that case! You have to use a bit of discretion...if the hook is buried somewhere near an eye or a big vein or a ligament or something, don't mess with it. Otherwise, you should never have to make an emergency room visit, rip it out, or push it on through.
dennis boatman Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 In all my years of fishing, about 50, I have never stuck a hook up to the barb in any body part...Very lucky I'm sure...I probably just jinxed myself... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Feathers and Fins Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 String trick works well if the barbs not in. If it is doing the string can do more damage, my latest was all the way to the bend of the hook and no way would the string worked it had to be pushed out and clipped. Do-it-yourself medicine is at your own risk and it can cause more damage. Lord knows working party boats for years I have seen and been hooked a few times, the value of a great first aid kit is beyound doubt and keeping up on tentinus shots https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
ollie Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 The only time I stuck myself really well was with a treble in the side of my calf. Nothing but muscle and not much loose skin. I was fishing with my son pretty close to the house and he was only like 4-5. I think he cried more than me! I remember cutting the line at the lure then getting in the car and driving home. I didn't know about the string trick back then. I went home down a six pack as fast as I could then preceded to do surgery on myself. Took an exacto knife and heated up the blade then made a small slit in the skin where the hook was and it just pulled right out. If I had gotten stitches it probably would have been two. Hurt a little, but my wallet felt a whole lot better! lol "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Greasy B Posted June 12, 2013 Posted June 12, 2013 Last time I had a hook in me it was late in the day and I was miles from my take out. Two of three trebles were buried almost too where they all tie together. That was such a mess I’m just now working up the nerve to fish with a fully barbed WTD again.
