Am I the only one who is annoyed that some goof offs in some branch of government somewhere have enough free time to worry about something so stupid, on your dime?

This kind of thing really indicates a lot of problems if you just stand back and look at it......wow

I'm annoyed by a lot of things the government is doing and does. They worry about such little trivial things and lose sight of the bigger issues. This issue is just another of their attempts to eliminating the possibility of "offending" anyone. The funny thing is They have offended far more people by this action had they left well enough alone. They just don't think things through, they think of the few while offending the many.

How about they let the Attorneys and Courts worry about the correctness of the words in writing of Laws or Court Cases?

So what do they call women in Washington State? Wo?

I think they're gonna go with Homo sapiens. That should be safe and won't offend anybody but maybe the few remaining Neanderthals.

I think it's kinda silly too, but if I were a fisherwoman I might be pokin' my chest out a little more proudly of late. I, for one, enjoy women's chests. ;-)

That said, I have to chuckle when I see some of you fellas conveniently lay your 'states rights' flags on the ground when an opportunity for gub'mint bashing arises. Reminder; It's not our gub'mint, it's Washington state's. And it's their right.

I can't dance like I used to.

I'm pretty sure that in most states, NEW laws are written in gender neutral language. Why? Because the legislators want to AVOID those legal entanglements. So is it such a stretch to go back and change the language of statutes in order to avoid those same problems? Yes, in most courts, arguing against a law because it used "fisherman" in it and the accused is a woman isn't going to get you very far, but it opens up the door to complications in what would otherwise be a simple case. We're all always complaining about the amount of time and effort that court cases take, and the sometimes really stupid decisions that are made. This reduces one possibility of a stupid decision.

I agree with you that much of it is stupid. My sentence above, "...used "fisherMAN" in it and the accused is a woMAN" points out the stupidity of trying to fix every little gender-based word. But at what point do you draw the line? If you're an attorney or a legislator, you just try to cover all the bases.

Now I'm not saying that's the only reason for trying to make sure everything is gender neutral. It obviously isn't. And just like I advocate for picking your battles when it comes to other issues, like the separation of church and state, I'd say people ought to be a little more careful about picking their battles on this issue. If the language does no harm, don't worry about it, and worry about instances where women are actually being legally or economically harmed by laws or other actions. That's something which is important enough for legislators to spend time on. This probably isn't worth the effort. But those on the other side of the issue should also maybe pick their battles a little better, because it does no harm to them, either.

The level of vitriol on a couple of threads in the past few days is just sickening to the point where it just makes this forum a worse place to hang out, no question. There are some types of hate-based speech that are not okay. I just don't understand it and hope they won't be allowed to dominate the discussion here.
