Tree rats are good and we eat them at our house. One year I even pressure canned them. Unreal good eats. Best way to tenderize them. Pop open a jar and the meat would fall off the bones. Make squirrel salad like you would do canned tuna. Eat with crackers or on bread. Drink the broth out of the jars.

I know it makes no sense at all but once I left home I vowed I would never eat a tree rat again. I'm 72 years old and I have kept my promise to my self.

I haven't eaten one since I was a kid. My grandma made a mean squirrel stew, or she would fry them and make squirrel gravy.

Made a great batch of Oxtail soup today if I say so myself. Tomato paste, cloves and beef stock make this soup special. Oxtails are starting to go up in price in the last 5 years. A very good hearty soup after a cold day on the river!

Ive eaten a pack of squirrels. I have used them in a German stew called Hasenpfeffer. True German cooking from my long gone aunt. I have not made it in years.

Since were on the subject. Anyone ever eaten monkey or better yet a Balou. As a drunken sailor in the Philippines i tried a bit of both but could just not put Balou in my mouth.

I haven't eaten squirrel in a long time, but I used to. I'm not a big fan of grays because of the size, but a big fox or two isn't bad. The best way I found to cook grays was in the crock pot. When they get to the falling off the bone stage just bone them out and make some gravy to top them with.

I don't eat squirrels either, but my buddy who cooks them often insists on cooking them in a pressure cooker and covering them with 2" of onions. Then, like Wayne says, wait for the meat to fall off the bone.

The biggest mistake in frying a squirrel is frying it to long. We fry it as long or longer than we do chicken and it is a 1/4 of the size at best. It doesn't take near as long to fry as you think.

If you will cut back on your frying time, it will be super delicious and a lot more tender than you ever thought. And for goodness sakes, use nothing but cast iron!!
