dtrs5kprs Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Hope it didn't sound like I was criticizing your rod choice, dtrs5kprs. I understood that yours were a perk from Ranger. Pretty nice deal, for sure, and I'd darn sure be using those rods for something or another. I will say that while fishing sure sucks at the moment, lots of good info gets passed around this time of year. This forum is just unheard of in that respect. We are blessed. Not at all, just agreeing. Have not bought anything Loomis since 2009 or so. Mostly St Croix and homebrew since. Have not found a St Croix I like for blades though. The "free" was as in "free with each $50K purchase", like a "free" Ranger jacket. Take care.
RSBreth Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 When I chuck spinnerbaits on Table Rock, Beaver, or Bull I mostly use compact but heavy spiinerbaits in the 1/2 to 3/4 weight on a 7' MH BPS Crankin' Stick. I hate the stupid powerhump handle though - I sand it off. I'd use something heavier but I use braid so it works.

Have built a bunch of split grips and love them for slow baits, but they can be a trial for the chunk and wind stuff, especially if it is something that pulls hard. Built a cranking/redfin rod last year and made a point to build a full rear grip, saved a little weight by going foregrip free.
dtrs5kprs Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 What's a Redfin? They are awesome, but can't get them all to wake right.
fishingaddiction Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Male Redfin Shiner by BZ.JPG They are awesome, but can't get them all to wake right. I love it! LMAO...... Great suggestions on spinner bait rod choices from everyone. I don't through a blade much, but when I do the max weight is the 1/2 oz war eagle screaming eagle. For that application I use a $ 79 bps 7' med action bionic blade rod with a bps pro qualifier reel at 6.4:1 gear ratio. Good enough feel, and soft enough tip to delay hook set and let them eat the bait. I just don't want a lot of money in a rod/reel set up that isn't used much. Born to Fish. Forced to Work.

Have you tried going heavier on your mono to get it to float higher and ride on the surface better? Also lose the snap swivel on it and that will help the nose come up. Or you could just nose hook it and strap a 1/16oz sinker on it and jig it on the bottom....that works too.
Quillback Posted January 23, 2014 Posted January 23, 2014 This guy would be a much better bait than the redfin minnow. Especially in dirty water.
