Members Bass Ivy Posted February 14, 2014 Members Posted February 14, 2014 I would say that a fish being thrown into an ice chest of ice alive is not any more humane than just throwing a live fish down and having him fillet'd in a few seconds. Looks to me like the ice would be a slow way to go out. In hot weather white bass almost have to be put on ice. They wont live in a live well for very long when the water temps get up there, and if they are dead for very long before being fillet'd they are not fit to eat.
Jerry Rapp Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I hope the bass being cleaned wasn't gay. If a gay bear was in the woods,.............
bfishn Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Choot 'em! (not while in the boat of course) If that's too drastic, you can have the gills and heart out in less than 5 seconds. Bleed out before icing is a good thing. Finish them at your leisure at home. I can't dance like I used to.
1969Larson Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 It always interests me how we create a hierarchy of living things that are not human and we don't even realize it. Food for thought, no pun intended: Why do we dislike cutting fillets from a live game fish, but we hook a shad through the nose/brain and drop him down to a fearful death without so much as a second thought? They're both fish, right? Fishermen (myself included) feel badly causing "pain" to certain vertebrates but not others. Groups exert all their energy protecting animal rights. Governments spend fortunes to find a tiny trace of a possible indication of bacterial life on a distant planet and it makes headlines. Meanwhile we destroy obvious human life when it is "inconvenient" and we call it our right to do so. What has happened to our perspective and values? (This is not directed at anyone in particular, rather just a sad and general observation of us as a whole.)
Justin Spencer Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I don't cut the loins out of a lamb without killing it first, same with a fish for me, common courtesy I guess. Gavin Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 I knock them on the head and bleed them out quickly whenever I want to keep. On ice or cooked as soon as possible.
Members RiverFisher1 Posted February 15, 2014 Author Members Posted February 15, 2014 I was just wondering what you guys did. I rent a boat slip and its easier to get it done at the cleaning station. I know of a lot of people who do the ice chest method and the fish go to sleep pretty quick (much like if you breathed on the moon, you'll pass out pretty quickly, then you'll die without knowing it). I'm not a PETA guy but I sure am thankful that I didn't live in the Civil War days when whiskey was the only anesthetic. I also thought the topic was interesting haha.
fishinwrench Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 This thread has made me fish-hungry. It has also reminded me that I either need to spend an hour with a chainsaw file on my electric knife, or break down and buy a new one.
Feathers and Fins Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 Knives of Alaska Wrench..... They are awesome, Ive been conducting a very Scihuntific study the last three years on how many geese and fish I can clean with the same fillet knife before it needs to be sharpened. I have hunted and fished all my life. The only fish I have ever quickly dispatched were Sharks and Wahoo. everything else fit in the ice chest and I never thought or cared about it. Hunting I quickly dispatch them. It is a real pain in the butt to have a bird come back to life when your flying down the lake or road and even worse is an Antelope get up in the back of your truck and try and get away. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
