Terrierman Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Had a client try and fish Nanofil yesterday in the wind. It was completely useless. We were fishing pretty lite and that stuff ccaught the air like a kite. it skated the 1/8 to 1/4 oz baits to the point my client put down his rod and picked up one of mine with Maxi on it. It changed his day. Said he was done with the fil especially if there was any wind. Guys, Maxima is not broken and does not need fixin. It is the best mono on the market and has been for more years and 10's of thousands of fish for this old fishin guide. I'm with you. Day in and day out Maxima just works best for me. Don't feel the need for anything but a Palomar knot either. My fishing life is already complicated enough.
Ham Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Awwww Rick man, I can show you several knots that are an EASY tie that are better than the palomar in certain situations. palomar is a very good knot. Especially for mono and especially for a single hook (or single hook lure). I think you need a different knot for fluro and I think you need a loop knot for panfish and trout jigs. stuartsx5 Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I have used Pro bass Excel for years and cannot find anything wrong with it. Its good stuff with good price. I'm with you Old Plug. I have used the Excel for years and last week I tried something new. My boss uses the P-Line copolymer so I thought I would give it a try. It is great for the fact it has no memory and no twist but it is way to soft. I used 4 pound for crappie and it is so soft that on the smaller reels it won't stay tight on the spool. If there is a little bit of wind it just bird cages. I will probably reload with the Excel for my fishing this weekend. That is tough stuff at a good price. Earl Stuart fishin is livin
Ham Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Excel is a very good value. It is good enough for sure, but it seems "dry" for lack of a better term. I have bought it in the larger size during the spring sale and I have had problems with the plastic spool the line is housed on. The upright sides have partially separated from the center spindle. The line slides into that crack and it becomes difficult to spool a reel up after that happens. You might want to take a second to look at the spools in the store when you buy them to make sure that you get a good one. Tough to do if ordering online I know. willyfish Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 I bought some 6 and 8lb maxima, give it a shot.
abkeenan Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Tackle Tour uses Maxima as the gold standard against which it measures all hybrids and flouro lines. That says it all. I use Yozuri Hybrid which does test at a higher level and is cheap. Another Yozuri Hybrid fan here.
WeekendWarrior Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Had a buddy buy some new maxi and said it has changed and not as strong as older stuff, color green is different and he could break 6 lb just by pulling and that was from 3 different spools/stores. Not what I am use to with maxi but have not had to buy any lately as I buy in 3000 yd spools. Anyone else had any problems with new maxima or just bad spools bought?
Old plug Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 I would be very surprised if the line is weaker. I would check on where it was used and how before I bought into that. Either that or it was just a bad run. I really wonder if the involved with a lot of fishing line really justifies it. I am convinced it does not. to much depends on how and where you fish it. I have a problem with braid bot showing abrasion. I can feel anything like that on mono when i retrieve it thruogh my fingers.
Members InPiney Posted May 1, 2014 Members Posted May 1, 2014 Nanofil is fantastic. Thin diameter and throws a mile. I've had it on two spools for a year now with very few problems. Fish it most of the time with a fluoro leader.
