Mitch f Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 Though I rarely fish it anymore, I found the Chug Bug very productive on Table Rock. The key seemed to be that the first motion you make should be after it settles (no rings) and be very subtle. I often had hits while it was sitting quietly or after it quivered. If that failed, I usually worked it back to the boat with a staccato pop pop pop pop. The reason I stopped fishing it and the Spook was my discovery of a bait that I could use either way. See my avatar. If you search the forum for Top Dollar you will find a number of threads that discuss it. Good Luck. Chug bugs are it! Kind of like the top dollar. But the little chug bugs suck IMO because they don't have the action "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Guest Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I was at Tenkiller on sunday and wished I hadn't left the topwater box at home. Swimbaits & flukes ruled the day. The marinas had a nice bream & shad supply hanging around. Zero on the Ned Rig, but I didn't lean on it as much as the tube.
bluebasser86 Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 I love the smallest size Zell Pop (pretty similar to the Pop R). I've got one in Ghost color that's caught me hundreds of fish of all sizes. I thought I'd lost it last year and it about killed me. Found the little guy buried in with my deep cranks for some reason. I took some pictures of baits I call my "Warriors" a couple years back and it was one of the first ones I took a picture of along with a well worn XR50.
Bitethis Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 I really enjoy throwing a pop'r! Top water is my favorite, just something about watching your bait and seeing and old bass come up with mouth open and smash it! Sometimes it scares me, as I pop that bait all the way back to the boat and have had them smash it 2' in front of me. I love it when that happens. I think the best tip I can offer when throwing it is to let it set for a few seconds before popping it. Dont hesitate to let it set for a few seconds when you start poppin it back either...chug chug chug...set for 5 secs, 1 chug...set for 5 seconds. Although constant popping does work sometimes, there are times where a pause here and there can be more effective. Just my 2c. I love a White bass top water bite too...OMG!
5bites Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Whites have given me a heart attack hitting at the boat. It's like a big flat rock hitting the water right in front of you.
buckcreekmike Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I'll be down Tuesday thru Saturday next week and won't be taking the boat unfortunately ( the wife says I only want to fish the whole time when I brig it..... Which is true of course because all I want to do is fish the whole time). So I will be relegated to fishing from the bank the whole time, but I did go out and buy a Zara puppy for early and late. I used to use them a lot and got away from it. I usually use the smaller rapala skitter pop for topwater and have caught quite a few at local little ponds and LOZ. I think I like the fact that you can pop it and let it sit still instead of a constant walk the dog retrieve or a constant retrieve with a buzz bait, though everyone says a buzz bait is a "big fish" bait. Wish me luck I'll be at big cedar and never have had much luck from the bank there.
Sprint21fter Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Go to the very back of Big Cedar you should get some bites around there.
MOBass Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Redfin question for everyone - What line are you throwing it on?
dtrs5kprs Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Redfin question for everyone - What line are you throwing it on? Switched to 30# power pro, no leader, last year. Love it. Throws better, runs better, hooks up better. Takes a few fins out of the reject pile and puts them back in action. Throwing it on the old Curado 100SF or a Lews cheapie, super soft rod.
