Ham Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Every time I think about using this rig I just imagine how long it takes to re-tie and I can't bring myself to do it As with many things, the knots yiou can use get easier with practice. I tie a leader long enough that the knot is just shy of being on the real. That gives me several re-ties before a new section of leader is required. I use the leader until it gets down to 18-24 inches or so. I won't start a trip at 18 inches. I'll re-tie before a trip IF the leader is fairly short. I use the Alberto because it is slimmer and flies thru the guides easier, but a uni to uni works also. Neither knot takes very long once you tie them a few times and BOTH knots are very reliable. MOsmallies Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 I've tried Yo-Zuri and it's a great line but I find myself liking P-Line CX Premium better. It's a super tough copolymer line like Yo-Zuri but I find it has less memory even without the line conditioner. x2 I use P-Line CX Premium on all of my reels (Spinning and Casting). Its very soft and limp which makes it perfect for spinning reels.

I do agree with you Paul this is an excellent line. If might be my choice if it was specifically for light spinning applications only. Yozuri is a tad bit stiffer no doubt. The small diameter lines are always on the bleeding edge of not having enough abrasion resistance. You have to constantly recheck the line for nicks with the smaller diameters. moguy1973 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 And it is limp enough for spinning reels? Yep...been using it on my spinning reel for probably 3 years now. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Seth Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I run 15# braid with a 8-12# fluorocarbon leader tied on with an Alberto knot. The braid is limp enough that I don't have to mess with swivels to prevent line twist like when I used straight fluorocarbon when tossing flukes and trick worms.
joeD Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 One can catch smallmouth bass using Stren, Trilene, P-Line, Maxima, Yo-Zuri, Cajun, Spiderwire, XPS,Power Pro,Seaguar,Suffix, any brand brand you choose, in mono or braid or flourocarbon. There is no consensus "best." It is all marketing. And it is all personal preference. Go buy something (generally less than 20 pound test) and fish with it. If you like it, fine, stay with it. If not, switch. Not that bigga deal. Remember, most fishing equipment sold these days are manufactured by just a few conglomerates. And, in general, most fishing equipment made and sold these days, is, generally, pretty good compared to just 10 years ago. Hard to go wrong.
Old plug Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Mitch you should be checking lines anytime your fishing in a. abrasive environment. One of the things i hold against braid is you cannot feel any abrasions
joeD Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Abrasions in lines can also, and frequently, be caused by nicks on the inside of your rods' ferrules. Check it out. Let's not forget: If a certain line manufacturer paid you (us) to use their stuff and extol its virtues when you (us) could, then... That's right. We are bought and sold in the marketplace. Look at any pro fisherman or race car driver. Walking advertisements. Golfers too. Do you think their success (and product advocacy) is a result of a certain brand name product? Steve, just buy 8 pound test in something.and go fishing. They don't make AMC Pacers or Ford Pintos anymore. But, that didn't stop people from driving something else. It's not that hard. You (we) are overthinking it.

hoglaw Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I see a lot on here about leaders on casting and spinning outfits. I do bot think tour really accomplishing anything. what is it your trying to do with a leader. ?????? I have never used one. even o. stuff like Fireline. The point of a leader is to have a less visible line at the lure, and to save the main line when using something expensive like nanofil instead of shortening it every time you want to re-tie. I have no idea whether fish are really "line shy" or not. I know I've experienced it when fishing for trout when a 7x leader gets lots more bites than a 5x, but in truth I don't know how much highly visible or large diameter lines affect bass. Carp and trout can certainly be line shy in my experience. Braid just looks so bright in the water, even the dark green color. If you're content fishing fireline directly to the lure then more power to you. But lots of folks feel like it's too visible, and if it costs just one bite from the old wise fish in the pool, then that's not acceptable to a lot of people. It's a problem that's easily avoided by putting a leader on, or fishing a less visible and castable mainline like CX-Premium. It would be neat to see a real study on the effect of highly visible line in clear water on various fish. I'm sure there's plenty of annecdotal evidence, and maybe a few side by side tests out there.
