The famous chef, Thomas Keller, was the consultant on the movie. What he had them draw was actually a dish called a tian. They look prettier but with almost the same flavors.

I large dice the veg (onion, eggplant, zucchini, and yellow bell pepper) and fry each separately over medium heat. I try to have the edges slightly brown by the the time the vegetables are cooked. All go in a bowl. I peel and seed the tomatoes and cut them in chunks about 1" in size. Garlic goes in with the onions. Thyme goes in the combined vegetables. Just before serving (warm or cold) I add minced basil.

That actually makes some sense as the Ratatouille we made didn't look anything like the movie.  I mean if you can't trust an animated movie with a rat as a chef then what is left to believe in.
