Travis Swift Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Thank you. Its gonna snow this weekend here in Kansas so I'm gonna make some up with the proper size spinners etc just for something to do.
Bill Babler Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 Thank you Travis that is way excellent of you to post that. The information and photographs and just good people going out of their way to help and educate here is simply off the charts. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
fishingaddiction Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I wonder why he chose a super fluke over a swimming fluke. Seems the tail would move a little better. Maybe he was going for more of a subtle presentation. I don't know and probably never will haha IMO: The reason for the regular fluke Jr instead of the swimming fluke is the horse head/roadrunner head has a tendency to roll over on it's side or do complete circles if reeled to fast or if it gets off balance. The straight tail fluke would act as a rudder and keep the head running strait. Also, less tail action may have matched the profile and movement of the herring in the cold water. Travis Swift Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Remember the Road Runner slogan is..."you can't fish it wrong as long as you fish it slow" sample principal applies whether it's a 1/8th ounce marabou or a 3/8th with a fluke Champ188 1

Sometimes a slogan started as real information. Will be interested to hear how the second swivel works out.
Travis Swift Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I went and bought the size of Willow leaf's he was using during the classic on my lunch break. They aren't cheap! The other part was the swivel he said he used and those are outrageous and I mean outrageous so I'm gonna try to stick to my cheap crane swivels and I have a sneaking suspicion they will work just fine

I just fooled around on Ebay last night looking at components to make underspins/road runner/etc. and if you didn't get fancy with special molds, ball bearing swivels, willow blades, etc and stuck with just the basics you could be making these for personal use for about $1.50 each depending on quantities.
Travis Swift Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 The secret to any home made horse head is to keep the crane swivel free of paint. If anyone is pouring these yourself like I am I will give you a tip. fill up a cup to the brim with water, I heat my heads with a torch then once they are hot enough dip just the tip of that crane swivel into the water for 1 second, you will hear a hiss sound and it will cool that swivel off just enough that when you dip it into the power paint it won't coat the swivel and there you have a perfectly clean free spinning crane swivel. I make hundreds of horse heads every year for family and friends and just found this trip a year or so ago. Hopefully that will help someone out. You will notice in my picture how clean my crane swivels are, heck they are way more clean than Blakemore's are even. Just a side note I don't sell my horse heads and neither should anyone else, they are patented and you will get a nasty gram. Ham 1

I looked today and I think I can make them for about $.60 each for the big ones, I can make the smaller road runners for about $.27 each. I usually make 500 to 1000 at a time in the winter when I do it. Ham 1
Sprint21fter Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I have had my personal best day of fishing with the fish head spin in timbered pockets and creeks from 39bridge-campbell point. I hardly use them anymore due to the a-rig but as long as the tournaments allow a-rigs the spins will stay in the box.
