First attempt at painting some crackle-warts is not what I would call success, but I will call it valuable learning:

1. Can't use anything other than straight acrylic paint.

2. Must cover the crackle medium with plenty of paint or else the clear coat won't settle Correctly.

3. Paint dries a little lighter than when not using crackle medium.20160120_194714.jpg.3116a5bad887fbf72c0420160120_194413.jpg.1325fbc902e1aac41282

my crackle recipe is much easier. Spray on several coats that are way too thick. Then hit it with the blow dryer before it has a chance to air dry. It will crackle somewhere. Never fails.

It's funny about crackleback finishes.. You gotta wonder if the first crackleback lure was a mistake, and the company just thought, hey, that doesn't look bad, wonder if we can sell it? When I was a kid fishing Wappapello with my dad, his favorite topwater lure was a green crackleback Lucky 13 with a prop added. I was not to touch that lure (probably because I had a bad habit of losing his lures). Now, everything is naturalistic finishes that are perfect in every way, but back then, there were really just a few patterns. Coachdog (white with black spots), red and white, ghost (black with white ribs), perch, and frogback were the most common. Cracklebacks were a little hard to find. Now, most of those color patterns would probably never sell. But I still think they work just fine.
