Flysmallie,

I know the automotive clear is super dangerous to breathe.

Ive evn heard it can cause exhaust fans to explode. Not sure why.

Can you elaborate on your method of negative airflow? Venta hood or box fan?

cut it with denatured alcohol to increase working time

Thanks for the tip.

I'm guessing the trick with that is to not thin your epoxy so much that it's gonna slide?

I mix the D2T (30min) on the bottom of a coke can, then add 1 or 2 drops of denatured alcohol after Ive mixed the epoxy.

less is more when cutting your epoxy.

It thins it out long enough to brush the epoxy onto 1 lure, for me anyway.

Yes it's dangerous to breathe. You expose yourself to lots of things that are dangerous to breathe. You just have to be smart about it. I'm not talking about negative airflow. Sorry if that was confusing. You just need to be moving the air. I put a box fan with a filter pointing out the garage door. I push the air out so fresh air is always moving through. I also make sure my wife's car isn't parked outside that door. Wear a respirator and get enough airflow so you aren't standing in a cloud and you will be fine.

The only way one of these coatings would cause an exhaust fan to explode is just poor management. If you let the coatings build up on a motor then yes it's going to cause it to run hot and of course there could be a fire.

I can't recall the last time I heard of a painter falling dead in a paint booth or a body shop exploding.

One thing I'd like to add, and it comes more from the rod building I've done rather than the short time I've been painting. If you have a method that works for you and it differs from others ways of doing things there's nothing wrong with that if the results are good. Different types of finish is a perfect example. Some people for whatever reason do not get along with brand "A" finish but love brand "B" and has never had a problem. The next guy hates brand "B". It just varies person to person so it pays to experiment to a point with different brands but don't dismiss one brand as bad. It just isn't for you.

Like was mentioned above tackleunderground.com is a great resource for information. Bassboatcentral.com has some too. Some.

Absolutely. The rod finish deal is a question of how many coats are you willing to apply and cure versus a single pass through with some others.

After all the trouble & expense, I have to ask myself 1 question.

Is all of this really worth it to paint a few lures every year that I might use 20% of the time?

(The Ned rig accounts for 80% of my fish catches anyway)

Probably not, but I enjoy having my own custom colored baits.

And that is it in the end.

If it is just an attempt to have some painted baits (especially warts) for less than the going rate, you are certainly better off financially to pick up some ugly colors and send them to Tim or Rob (just to name two). Or even jump on a few on eBay.

There has to be more involved in the decision calculus than just saving a buck, because you won't. Likely ever. Left alone at night, airbrushes are like rabbits. One becomes three, then you need a multi brush manifold, and a bigger stand. and extra cups/needles/tips, and on and on...

I had a dog and his name was BINGO! Most of the stuff I do for fun doesn't make sense in one way or another.

Roger that. I could follow that up with a pic of a gallon size industrial hot pot for dipping tubes. Makes an awesome doorstop.
