Members cReekFishin Posted March 25, 2015 Members Posted March 25, 2015 I agree with smallieguy87, using a bigger tube really helps. Learned that for myself this weekend. Was using a bitsy tube and got a couple hooked deep. Switched to some tubes I made at home that were a bit bigger and bulkier, probably 3.5in, and it seemed to fix the problem. Smallieguy87 1
joeD Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Ned rig + Go Pro + bluegrass music = hours of 12" smallie fun. If you want to catch a bigger (18" and above), smallie on an Ozark stream, put away your ned rig. Simple as that. Lancer09 and MOsmallies 2

dtrs5kprs Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Ned will catch 18" plus fish, you just gotta wade thru all the small fish Yep. I'm dying to learn the super secret everyday answer to whacking big brown fish. Short of fishing in Michigan.
joeD Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Good grief fellas, this is about a lure. Not YOU as FISHERMEN. The Ned Rig. Go ahead and fish it with my blessing. Make sure you have a beetle spin for a back up.
Gavin Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 I do like fishing big stuff better, but it's a great bait to have when the fish aren't very active. They always eat it, so I use it to find a pattern when my search baits are not working. The feeding lamp can light up anytime, so have other candy ready to select for bigger fish.
Guest Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 My beetle spin is an inline buzzbait that I throw when paddling hard during the final hour. I got beat by a weightless senko when the river current went slack in late summer. So the Ned isn't an end all do all bait. It covers about 70% of the fish I catch annually. The other 30% are moving baits. Square bill, Biffle bugs, 3.5" swimbaits, smoke grub. I'm Greedy & want to catch everything that bites. The Ned filled that void. Sure it's a little fish deal & a numbers game. Sometimes, you can fire up a group of smallmouth by catching them all & letting them fight over the bait. The big one usually sneaks up on you. Like that old Indian from the good the bad & the ugly,
dtrs5kprs Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Have not fished running water in a long time, but it was always hard to beat a buzzbait, inline or otherwise, for bigger brown fish in a river. Would think you are as apt to catch little fish on some of the standard creek baits like small topwaters, little cranks, inline spinners, etc., as the Ned. I always thought part of the charm of floating or wading was just relaxing and catching some smaller fish. Just a fun way to kill a summer, or winter, day. If big bass are the obsession, little water that moves is sort of an uphill climb from jump.
