The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) is another good one.

A good, but somewhat obscure, Jack Nicholson movie is The last Detail.

The Sand Pebbles is another good oldie.

I know I've seen Sand Pebbles, and my memory is that it was a good one, but I've got to look it up. You and me are tracking on the movies!

When I used to teach English, I developed a plot archetype grid. Standard plot devices that matched with standard themes.

BMGBLGBGGB - (Boy meets girl, Boy Loses girl, Boy Gets Girl Back) The Notebook

Impossible Love - Romeo and Juliet

Against the World - Kafka's Metamorphosis, Will Smith's Enemy of the State

Save the World - Armageddon, Independence Day

Mismatched Partners - Lethal Weapon, Dirty Dozen

Who Done It? - Clue, The Seven Percent Solution

Coming of Age - Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter is Dead,

Young Person Discovers Powers - Harry Potter, Arthur, Spiderman

Fish Out of Water - Elf, Big, Being There, Some Like It Hot

Primal Fear - Jurassic Park

Ugly Duckling - She's All That, Miss Congeniality, My Fair Lady

Every good movie has one or more of these at its heart. Once you know the category/genre you can appreciate the skill with which it is used.

I keep seeing all these great cheesey movies that I forgot to put on my list!

Christmas Vacation? Vegas Vacation? Grumpy Old Men? Major League? How could I forget those?

Then I want to add a couple more to my list:

Slingblade

Trouble with the Curve

Blind Side

Ness, this is the best and the worst thread I have ever seen. It is impossible to narrow it down to 5 movies, but it certainly does provoke a lot of thought and conversation.

Remember - If at first you DO succeed, try not to act surprised & quit while you're ahead.

Yeah, I pasted my list on the first post and tried to narrow it down to five, and just gave up. I've picked up a few to add to the big list from this thread.

  • Midnight Cowboy for just a really sleazy downer of a movie. Makes you feel like warmed over crap.
  • Outlaw Josey Wales, Because I'm from Missouri and it's a real good Clint
  • Treasure of the Sierra Madre. No explanation needed.
  • Deliverance. Another one to make you feel like warmed over crap.
  • Ronin. Another dark one.

Geez -- I gotta get to work. I've got this thread, IMDB and Amazon Prime (for trailers) going. This could chew up my whole day! I've probably added 10 to my big list from stuff on here I overlooked. Here's one more I haven't seen on here yet -- Hud. Dang, that's a great movie. Watch the trailer on Amazon if you care.
