Also, make sure that you check up under the cap on the tongue!

I usually rub some vaseline or grease up under there.

(just think? If some pervert googles the keywords 'balls', 'tongue' and 'vaseline', he could be our newest OAF member?)

Sounds fishy, and I didn't believe it myself, ( all puns intended ), but aluminum foil balled up and used like a sponge or rag, will remove surface rust. It will not leave any scratches and is safe for any chrome. I have used it on my Camaro's wheels more than a few times. Just wanted to share a tip.

Rub some Naval Jelly on your ball then work it over with steel wool.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner.

Naval Jelly is outstanding for removing all rust. It contains phosphoric acid which quickly converts iron oxide to iron phosphate. Just wipe it off. Super easy to use. After rust removal, add what you like.

Applying something over the iron oxide doesn't get rid of it all.

On a related topic, my old Suburban would get rust and flaking paint on the receiver and the plate that surrounds and hangs below the receiver, and has the 2 holes to hang your safety chains.

I wire-brushed it, and got most of the paint off, and then sprayed it with truck bed-liner. Don't remember the brand, but it stayed on there for 3 or 4 years and was still good when I sold it last year.

stuff newspaper or an old rag INSIDE of the receiver as you are spraying, or it will screw up the fit for your trailer ball assembly.

Also, spread some grease on the inside of your receiver and on the shaft of your trailer ball assembly and working it around in there by sticking it in all the way, and then back out a few times.

(oh, boy! now we have 'shaft' and 'stickin it in all the way' on this thread!)

Oh, sure!

That takes absolutely no imagination, and totally takes all the fun out of this thread! :beaten:

Well, I have to give ya that one. As you were, folks.

It was always rumored that ol' Rita could remove the chrome, it stands to reason she could do rust too...
