dtrs5kprs Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Looks like COE got the rise stopped too, unless more weather is coming. Probably bad news for the shallow bite.
abkeenan Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Don't count out buying blanks and paint. These are from August 2013 (when I first started trying to learn an air brush) - and they'll get 15' or so. When I wrap lead tape around them, they go a little deeper. if I want to REALLY get down and dirty, I'll hang a 3/16oz drop shot weight off of the front treble. If you don't consider your time costing anything (I like to mess with colors during the winters), you can get these things in the mail, painted, with good hook and good split rings for $6-$7 20140806_072906_LLS.jpg 20140806_072830_LLS.jpg 20140806_072652_LLS.jpg Those are some sweet looking cranks. I tried my hand in the past buying blanks from Predator Bass Baits and had a cheapo air brush set. After all said and done I think I paid more for all the painting crap than just buying them from the "pros" like Strike King, SPRO and other hard bait manufacturers. At that point I just said forget it and buy baits that I don't have to screw with and are good to go out of the pack. I will buy spoons and other stuff that is cheaper and easier to put together than buying from the retailer but that's about as far as my lure painting and making goes these days. jolicious 1
Ham Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 I've got a bunch of DD22's I need to sell and some 20+'s. I dont think I ever bought any of the 30+'s. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Members Angler's Port Pete Posted June 23, 2015 Members Posted June 23, 2015 Pete, if nobody responds. I'll run over there Friday and check it out. Hopefully, we don't get anymore rain and the lake will come down a bit before then. Thanks Chris!

I agree, as long as a fella likes to paint, it's worth it. But you gotta understand it's for fun so you don't worry about making them perfect for sure
Champ188 Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 I really doubt the fish notice "perfect" the way we humans do. That said, I'm pretty picky about perfect when it comes to buying off-the-shelf jerkbaits. At today's prices, they should be perfect. Still, I bet an imperfect home paint job would work just as well most of the time.

Yezzer - I think sometimes we get too hung up in the perfection aspect from paint jobs to the particular placement of little bitty dots / stripes that can't even be seen from more than a couple feet. I was talking to a buddy about this just the other day in that I am a believer in this order in regards to what makes a bait good or bad for catching fish: 1. Action 2. Action 3. Primary color (I don't get hung up on hues) 4. Action 5. Overall profile I am a BIG believer in action, of course. abkeenan and Champ188 2
jolicious Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Exhibit #2, your honor, in regards to action vs. color (Always wanted to play a lawyer): These two have a top coat that's pretty much unseen until they are either out in the sunlight or under the water on a sunny day that throws a cinnamon-type sheen. I am convinced that the extra layer of color doesn't help anything, but I like it, and I think it's fun to mess with color shifting paints, so I have started using them. Exhibit #3: The stripes are barely visible indoors, but they really POP in conditions similar as previously outlined. I think it's more about the action, though. If I had the patience and maturity to test, I'd catch a fish on one, then throw the other - but dang I hate to put a bait down when it's working... Fish24/7 1
5bites Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Dang it. I need to try that fat papa blank. What is the max running depth you've observed with it?
