Members gonso24 Posted September 4, 2015 Members Posted September 4, 2015 I have heard from multiple people that Simpson has possible state record bass in there, but I gave up on that place a few years back due to multiple fishless outings. I fish Jefferson Lake in Forest Park quite a bit and pull 2#'s out of there quite frequently. I seem to have the most luck right where the lily pads end, and around the fishing platform if it is not busy, which it usually is. I also recently have been having luck at Tilles Park, pitching under the dock there. I was very surprised at the amount of bass that are in that lake. Nothing too big, maybe 1#-1.5#, but they were little footballs, and put up good fights. Another surprisingly good spot is the Pond at Logan Chiropractic Campus. Not the one in the front of the campus, you aren't allowed to fish that one, but towards the top of the hill on the left side. It is open to the public, and there is a shocking amount of quality fish in such a small body of water. They opened a disc golf course there last year, so you may have to dodge Frisbee or two, lol, but I have always done good there.
Alex Heitman Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Gonso24 that's where I go to school. Shhhh on the fishing there lol. I fish there quite often since I'm there everyday. gonso24 1
nomolites Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Spanish lake has good bass fishing and a boat launch; you did not hear it from me.....
Haris122 Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 Went to Unger earlier today to practice casting the bait caster I got me recently (boy am I finding those reels to be none user-friendly). Well I decided while doing that I may as well toss out another rod to sit there with some shrimp for carp or catfish. Anyways after about 45 minutes or so, something hit the shrimp and was pulling against the reel like mad. Luckily I was close enough to start reeling while it was still on. Thought it had got off but it just turned out to be smaller than it initially seemed from the bite. It was a stocker size channel cat. First time in a while I caught something of any size there. A few months ago while the river was still flooding into the lake, I got a couple of tiny little fish on a rooster tail there, and that was the most I had caught in probably a year from there. Might be early to make a serious critique of the prospects, but it seems like the flood has done the lake some good in terms of stocking fish in there.
David Unnerstall Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Spanish lake has good bass fishing and a boat launch; you did not hear it from me..... There are always boats, there. I fished in in my cedar-stripper on Monday but had no luck. It is not to say there aren't fish there -- I have been in bad slump for a couple of years, now. I threw the NED rig, a storm wart and a tandem spinner bait.
mjk86 Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I've been to Jefferson Lake in FoPo a few times lately. Been catching decent sized bass working a black blue jig or junebug worm slow out in the grass. I like Jefferson lake....I think the FoPo lakes get overlooked a bit. Ive never caught them on a jig there before, but occasionally they will go crazy for a spook (today in fact on my lunch break caught a few). Id say 1 outta 5 times i go ill catch something, but when they do bite, i usually catch more than one. I think that if i could get up early and fish for a few hours id do better. 45min at high noon is not the best deal.
jpb2187 Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I use to work close to there so I would go there at lunch all the time. Spooks and buzz baits are great. If they won't hit on top, junebug worm, jig out in the deeper grass, or weightless fluke type bait are great too. Once the water cools the lipless bite will be insane, and then once the bass stop eating the lipless, the trout will hit it until the water freezes. I say all of this, but when I woke up at 530 am to go there on Saturday I skunked out
Members gonso24 Posted September 14, 2015 Members Posted September 14, 2015 Yeah, Jefferson Lake at FoPo, I use a rage rig in junebug or green pumpkin and usually have pretty good luck. A big white buzz bait use to work wonders there, but has not netted me much success in the last year or so(guess they wised up haha) Ive been nailing them recently in pad crashers on the outskirts of the lily pads on the far end.
Members jackdizo Posted September 22, 2015 Members Posted September 22, 2015 You can say what you want about Simpson Lake. Yes, it does have a water treatment facility running into it. Yes, the lake is very stained dirty water (not to the point of it being a cess pool in my opinion), Yes, it can be very fickle and the bite can be tough. With all that being said its my favorite county park lake. Like mentioned above, I usually dont expect to have a numbers day when going there to bass fish, although I have. But there are very very large bass inhabiting the lake. You just have to put your time in and figure the lake out. The lake is not a secret by any means, but most find it a very difficult fishery, specifically for bass, and choose not to spend time on, and thats fine with me. In my opinion, if your looking to join the double digit club for largemouth bass, and you want to do it close to home in the St Louis Area, Simpson lake is your best bet.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Double digit largemouth this far north. Wow! That's saying something. Heck I had to Google up the sate record. Are ten pound bass common in MO??? Took me 40 years to get an 8 lber. Pete
