Sometimes the most ignorant are often the most vocal.

Think of it this way, if an area of the lake due to circumstances (high algal bloom and subsequent die off) has used up all the available oxygen, fish do not have reasoning power to stop and think about what is happening and what should I do. Just like if you were walking around outside, and all the oxygen was removed from the air you are breathing, you don't know what has happened, or how far it extends, you only know you can't breathe, how long could you go without breathing.   Its not an uncommon thing to happen, has happened before and will happen again.

I'm not doubting that if you take the oxygen from the water that fish will die, I am doubting  that there is actually oxygen depletion to that degree to begin with.  And if it truly is then there shouldn't be a live fish in a pond ANYWHERE.

My point is that IF itvis due to oxygen depletion then I don't believe it got depleted because of heavy rain and high water.  Again ANDY!!!!  I don't claim to know WHY fish are dead, I just don't think the biologist do either.

What causes fish to not swim below the thermocline and die from low oxygen ? And why are shad not dying by the dump truck loads?

I have removed my response as Sisaluki did a much better job of explaining some cause /effects than I did.

Sounds good (believable to a degree).   With all that inflow of fresh water though (from all directions including from the sky) I just have a hard time buying that there are massive layers of oxygen depleted water that just stays stratified in it's poor condition without mixing.

The reason sounds too technical for me, so it must be true.  it just makes me fish with a little more intensity.  One more obstacle to overcome. As long as there is one fish left alive I'm chasing it.
