fishinwrench Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Trout are dumber than a box of rocks. Cut one open and look at what's in his gut (very little protein, mostly moss, leaves and grass). A fly pattern that a fish won't bite has never been invented.
Flysmallie Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 If I added a hook to a strike indicator I could have a limit in no time. Last time I fished Roaring River I had a decent sized trout come up and take a pink thingamabobber twice. The second time I was able to pull him about halfway in before it let go. I agree with Wrench. Trout may be skittish and difficult to catch at times but that shouldn't be confused with intelligence.
John W Kelly Posted September 10, 2015 Author Posted September 10, 2015 Did you take these pics, John? Very nice! Rusty is exactly what I thought when I saw the midge. It would be an awesome project to photograph as many midge flies as possible here on Taney... both pupas and adults. I'd have to take picture taking courses and probably get a new camera lens. Hi Phil, yes I did. Thank you! That day, I lugged around a full frame camera with a 100mm macro lens. I normally carry a small Sony RX100m2 in my waders, which also takes good high-res macro pics. A pupa/adult fly project would be cool. I have photographs (varying quality) of several different pupa that I've come across. If you ever want a third hand to tag along with you and take pics of fish or bugs, let me know I often see this one wiggling it's way to the surface: Flysmallie and Phil Lilley 2
snagged in outlet 3 Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Yeah I like those pics too. John, can you post up your P and P fly for me to see please? I did a goggle search all sorts of color combo's came up. I love catching stupid trout. Pete Phil Lilley 1

Greasy B Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Matching the hatch is good to a point, but ALL fish are opportunistic feeders. That's what I kept telling the big trout swimming in the San Jaun River a couple of weeks ago, they weren't listening. fishinwrench Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 Stupid trout. No kidding! We blame ourselves when we cant catch them, but it is they that are the idiots. Sitting down there nibbling on random pieces of floatsom and ignoring objects that totally resemble something beneficial to eat. It's a wonder they dont swim into pockets of water that lack oxygen and suffocate. Oh wait.....we just recently learned that they do that all the time.
