MOsmallies Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Tied up my normal hair jig (thin maribou base with arctic fox on top) but I added two strands of living rubber... I figure they'll float up at rest and give it a little more life like action... Might not be necessary but it's fun to experiment... Gavin, Seth, fishinwrench and 2 others 5

Seth Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 My rabbit, squirrel and jigheads came in the other day so I need to get started on tying myself. What size hooks do you use on your 1/8oz football heads Mitch?
fishinwrench Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 I gotta ask..... At what weight does it not matter whether the head is football shaped or not ? The way I see it anything below 1/2oz. probably fails to produce the desired effect. I'm on the fence at 3/8. 1/4oz. and lighter heads could be round, square, or shaped like a pickle, I'm not convinced that it matters. dtrs5kprs 1

Ron I used to think the same thing. But several years ago I took a couple of my daughters down to an small Ozarks creek and we found some minnows with a chartreuse back. It surprised me. If I make it through the winter I'll have to get down there and see if any are still around to photograph.

I prefer a football head for any jig that I plan on dragging or letting sit still. The reason being that they are less likely to roll or lay down on their sides. Therefore the baits is always in the optimal position for action and hookset. I don't think that changes with the weight but maybe I'm wrong. Just my preference. Maybe you are referring to their supposed ability to get hung up less in rocks? If so I can see what you are saying about the smaller weight football jigs probably not being much different than say a ball jighead. Mitch's custom football jig is the best dragging jighead I've ever found. It is so balanced and the design does not allow it to fall on it's side or roll. You could throw the thing in the air 100 times and it will land with the hook pointing straight up 100 times. Smalliebigs actually tried it one day at his desk. They are extremely snag resistant as well!
fishinwrench Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Yeah I love Mitch's 5/16 heads. I'm referring to football heads for deep water use on rock. I use 1/2 and 3/4 quite a bit just because I can stay connected to them in deep and rough water. I just see no need for lightweight football shaped heads I guess unless they are very lightly dressed (no skirt, just a craw or finesse worm). dtrs5kprs 1
Gavin Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I use aspirin heads and stand up heads on most of my hair jigs that are not tied on Mitch's jig heads. The aspirin heads start as ball heads and I shape them in a vice. Not exactly even so the fall like a zig jig. Hardly ever lose one of Mitch's. Some have been worn out and retied a few times.
