fishinwrench Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 True that ^ I wish for longer, easier casts every so often, but low profile reels just cramp my hands. I feel like I have to squeeze them to hold on, whereas the old round bombs just kinda sit in my hand nice and secure with no effort at all. Plus they have enough weight to balance out a heavier rod. It's all personal preference but I'll be sad on the day that round reels go away.
Guest Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I've got a bunch of old round Abu gracias, 5500 & 4600 series. I might be willing to trade them for a low profile reel.
Old plug Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I have two low profile reels because my shoulders just about non functional. I got them because I went down to the lightest tackle I could find.I fish both of them on 7 ft cherrywood rods. That lasted a couple of years now even that is getting to. Be too much. i only fish about 2 hours a day now at the most. Then it is 99% flipping and pitching I a. Trying to learn to cast right handed. My main opinion on the new reels is that I know someone owns a repair shop. Awful lot of them seem to have problems pretty fast with heavy use.

The tatula said mentioned earlier have a wide profile, not sure if it would be enough. I think the old shimano Calais were pretty beefy too. Im the opposite. The smaller the better. A tatula is to big for my tastes. That stinks because you can get them on eBay cheap. On bps bps I was told they are trying to move toward store brand stuff as much as possible by two different employees. Totally defeats the purpose of me going there if I can't window shop. If I'm not there I can't buy any products at all.
Old plug Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Wrench like you I do mostly pitching and flipping. The casting of the line was almost as easy as the left hand right off the bat. the problem came with the pitching mostly. I could pitch 30ft with ease with the left hand. It has been tough to switch to the right pitching. I am short, long high and only tight to the target about 25% of the time. Going to take some practice to make that work even with a low profile.

If I'm not there I can't buy any products at all. It's always been that way at BPS. I am sure their highest profit margins are on their own store brand products and that is relayed to their associates working the floor. Push our products first, then give info on other brands if need be. But I think people fail to understand that members of OAF aren't really your typical fisherman. I would dare to say that well informed fisherman such as the members here make up the minority of customers walking into a BPS store. For every one of us there are 5 that don't know what a Daiwa Steez is nor what you are referring to when you mention a Vision 110. It's a Megabass. Is that a movie on the SyFy network? BPS caters to the average Joe's that don't know any better and they are the majority of guys who walk into the store and also walk out of the store with BPS rod/reel combos. There is nothing wrong with that and I am NOT trying to say that I, nor the members here, are elitist gear snobs (although we kind of are) or that we are better than the guys that buy the BPS stuff. Just saying they are truly the ones lining Johnny Morris' pockets. Johnny knows where his bread and butter comes from. Champ188, Bill Babler and big c 3

Bill Babler Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Are you saying I'm not a Gear Snob? Plug, I'm sorry, but these new Lew's Reels will out toss your Abu by so much you will be amazed The new Tournament Pro. is just silly, 6 oz. in weight. Pair that will a Falcon MMC-6-174 Jig Rod. and you are holding a total of 7.4 oz. that you can winch your boat onto the trailer with. Not to hard on old shoulders, I can attest to that. Or if you are feeling really frogy you can go with the Daiwa Steez or the Lew's Pro Mag and drop on down another oz. But the Steez does come with a warning. If you ever buy one you will buy many, many more. For sure not for everyone. But, if you are a gear Snob? Good luck big c 1 http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
