Does anyone know why it took till the rain began for the Coe to get serious about pulling water when the forecasts were out there for at least a few days.  Sad that whomever has the final call, does not have more vision.  His/her decisions are costing people and businesses lots money and what's worse endangering people.  In my line of work, you miss calls like this not once (2011) but twice, your looking for a new gig....

The answer to the question is, because #1 their employees are stupid & #2 the USACOE could care less. Here are the facts, 2008: " THE 100  YEAR FLOOD " 2011: " THE 103 YEAR FLOOD " 2015: " THE 107 YEAR FLOOD " In all 3 cases they had more than enough notice of what was coming & did nothing but create a complete & total " FUBAR " !!!!!!! Yet, they all kept their jobs & continue to collect a paycheck. Our " GOVERNMENT @ WORK " !!!!!!! I remember after the flood in 2011 many of our politicians were quick to jump on the bandwagon & call for an investigation into the USACOE & their leadership, operational procedures, etc. as to many people were suffering from their handling of these types of situations. Well guess what, " AINT NOTHIN CHANGED BOYS " & I hate to say it but it probably never will !!!!!!! So, the moral of the story is, get yourself a government job & live happily ever after.

There was a time that the lake would be drawn down in the fall and winter for anticipation of spring rains.  Many of you will remember the early 90's (maybe) when the lake was down 903'.  Early 80's (maybe late 70's) 895' ish one winter.  What changed the COE thought process of keeping the lake at 915 to 917 this time of year?  Is it the massive community docks not being able to withstand winter draw down in smaller coves and creeks? For example, look at Buzzard Hollow up the James, if they were to draw the lake down to 905' the two community docks sitting across from one another at the mouth would nearly touch each other and make it difficult for boats to get into Buzzard.  Is the COE wanting to hold more water to sell more electricity?  Is it the skiers and wakeboarders who don't like to see what they are going over the top of?  If flood control is the main purpose of the COE the last 8 years has proven ineffective. Just ask those downstream. Being serious, what reason does the COE not draw the lake down anymore?

Notice the "under-bridge" debris-catchment construction is submerged and that will probably delay bridge re-construction timing if the wave action damages it.

Well, the good news is that the bridge workers can come to work by boat now, and they can fish with a cane pole instead of those large saltwater Penn reels and downriggers?

If it didn't close in 2011 it probably won't this time. It is an impressive sight though, especially if the wind starts whipping some water across it.
