Flicker shad are a good crankbait, but I have an addiction for Shad Raps, unfortunately they are NOT that cheap.  I bought a lure retriever a few years ago and paid for it many times since saving my raps from the dangers on Truman.

I have lost a few too. I like the flicker minnow really well, holographic shad color seems to call the walleye at certain times. Which kind of lure retriever are you using ? I figured those things were just a gimmick, I have heard of the spark plug thing but have never tried it.

While jigging a spoon I did get a nice rapala crank bait out of 18 feet of water. It had been there a while, It was covered in green goo and all the hooks were gone. With a good cleaning and some new hooks, I think it is as good as new. Colors not bad either.

The one I bought was a telescoping stick thing with the screw looking thing on the end, think it goes to 18 feet or so which is more the my shad raps will dive to so seems to work well.  Almost need two people though , one to control the boat and one to do the retrieval.

I have literally saved many hundreds of $$ with lure retrievers; I spend a lot of time bouncing cranks off the bottom in 15-35 FOW for walleye and get hung up a lot.  I have two retrievers but normally use the type that slides down the line with the chains - I upgrade the line to good trot line cord because the thin stuff  it comes with will break when you are trying to straighten a treble out pulling a lure off a boulder or out of a brushpile; you will be out your retriever and lure otherwise.  It can be tricky on a windy day controlling the boat and retrieving but my catch ratio has gone way up since I quite avoiding the places that hold snags(and fish!).

I will be looking for one for sure. I broke down and bought one of those fancy trolling motors last year, so boat control is for the most part a nonissue.

I wont throw a crank without my retriever. I bet it has saved me $200 last year alone. I use the one that slides down the line also. works probably 85% of the time. Every trip we use it 3-4 times, that adds up quick especially when some cranks are $10+.

I trolled one day with two shad raps on and two flicker shads and i couldnt really say one worked better than the other so i choose the cheap route.

I have that telescoping style also and it was kinda a pain to use i thought. I would work great to get an A-rig back though
