I will never buy another Shimano spinning reel. They had decades to address the reel binding when a bushing absorbed water. A fishing reel that can't be used near the water is not the reel for me.

There are always guys that say yeah but this model Shimano is ok or that doesn't happen when the Shimano or whatever.  I'm done.

Not sure what year model my Lew's Team Gold spin is. I bought some in 2014 and some in 2015. I don't know what to think, but for now I would not buy another one.

I have a "size 35" Pfluger Supreme on my Eyecon. Good pairing.

I too have had issues with shimano,  i had 2 saharas that the bail spring broke on 1, and the drag was screwy on the other. I have Pfluger spinning reels on just about all my rods now.  No problems ever.  Even the cheap one the Trion is a nice reel for 30 bucks.  I also have an okuma reel which performs nicely.  Don't know which one,  but about 50 bucks if I remember.

Couldn't agree more on this reel. Donna and I have several and have had no problems with any of them. Lew's spinning reels have been another story. It'll be a long while before I buy another one, if ever. I have one less than a year old with the main drive gear ratcheting every time I try to play a fish.

Wonder why the casting reels are so great but the spinning reels have problems?  That's odd.  Seems like spinning reels are so much simpler.

I would say if you got the 6-10 version (third down from the top) you'd have a pretty versatile set-up on which you could throw just about anything.

I picked up a couple of lower end Lews combos at Cabela's a few years ago. Priced so the rod was basically free. The reels have been just fine, and one of the rods sees some regular use for redfins by the kids.

Curious if anyone has an opinion on last year's model vs. the 2016 version?  My brother bought a couple of the 2000's last year and loves em'.  I was considering one of the 2016's since he likes his so well but now y'all got me second guessing that idea.  All my other spinning reels are Shimano Stradic's and and a couple of Shimano Sarro's for lighter weight applications.  This was to be more of an experiment (and an excuse to buy something new to welcome the season!) and had planned to pair it with one of the Eyecon's that Dave recommended (see previous excuse) than a need for something specific.

Daiwa 3000 size, any model from the $30 Crossfire up, except maybe a 2500 in the new Excelers (sized differently).

I looked at bunch of 2016 Lews spinning reels. None of them were in the class of Daiwa, Shimano, Pfleuger. Even the Okumas felt better. It almost seems like the spinning reels are an afterthought for them, as in real men don't fish with spinning reels. By comparison, the Japanese companies have them dialed in for the finesse market.

Thanks Dave - I'll do some more research.  Used many Daiwa bait casters over the years but never really cared for their spinning reels.  Haven't given them much thought for probably 15-20 years since.  For what it's worth, I've yet to have a serious problem with any of my Stradic's and been using them pretty much exclusively for that same 15-20 years.  They've become rather pricey the last couple of years though so willing to consider alternatives.

Bought two of the Tournament Pro's Lew's bait casters last year and absolutely love em'.  Just picked up another one of the 2016 Tournament Pro "G's" on eBay yesterday new, in the box for $150.  Not sure if they changed it much but I hope not.  Over the last 45 years I've had a few of about everything (including the original Speed Spools) and think the new Tournament Pro's are the best yet.

Thanks again!

The Daiwas have wide, tapered spools that help minimize twist and increase distance, and have been pretty bulletproof. Rain, ice, etc. Lots of brown fish have tested mine. I switched from Shimano in 2006. Have a couple of UL shimanos, but just about everything else is Daiwa.

Either one runs circles around the Lews.

I like Shimano spinning reels personally. Reels are just like anything else. There are good ones and bad ones. I did buy a Lews spinning reel recently. Not sure what model, but it has a smaller body with the large mouth spoil. It's great. Think it was $79 or $99.
