Ness - that's a pretty cool collared lizard and a nice photo. We have them in MO as well, but I have never seen one.

I've seen one Eastern Collared lizard and he was flying! He ran down hill thru a pasture and flew across the road when I was on my way into Sunburst Ranch.

Lid love to see more. Eastern Red Cedars have degraded their preferred habitat and reduced populations.

Nice Ham, I have never seen one here but have seen plenty of six lined racerunners which are green as well.  358-1025.jpg

I've seen six-lined racerunners in Elephant rocks state park. Racerunners and collared lizards prefer glade areas, which as Ham pointed out are being overrun by cedars in most places.

There was a glade on a hillside along Terre Bleue Creek in St. Francois County that had a nice population of collared lizards back when I was a teenager and waded the creek a lot.  I'd walked up into a plowed field to look for Indian relics, and the glade pretty mcuh came right down to the edge of the field.  It was rocky and grassy.  I saw one on a rock, so I walked up to get a better look and saw several more.

There were also a few in what is now St. Joe State Park, living on the embankments that impounded the mine tailings.  No idea if there are still any there.

For some reason the old timers, including my grandpa, called them "glade bitches".

I have seen one collared lizard back in the 80' s.  It was on a granite glade in a shutin's area of the upper Castor River.

Alright, don't mean to hijack the thread, but this doesn't really warrant a new thread. Went out to our beautiful Kansas Flint Hills last weekend and saw this guy:

Had to look it up -- that's a Collared Lizard.

I have only seen one in my life. I was backpacking on Tom Sauk mountain, it was up near the old reservoir 25 years ago. I think they are rare it's good to see one again. Thanks for the post !

We saw two of them that day. Of course, the area is a lot different than the Ozarks.
