Headed down with 2 other couples on a camping outing. Fished Sunday afternoon and found the park very crowded. Lots of moss coming down and very windy. Managed a few on white roach and various color glo balls. Noticed a lot of tiny flies coming off so went back near evening and tried a yellow parachute Adams. No 16. Caught several from hatchery outlet to the whistle bridge. It was a lot of fun as the water is clear as gin and you could watch the action. Fish seemed either dandies or dinks not much in between.

There are apparently quite a few sub legal browns in that stretch and a couple hit the dry like bass! Noted other anglers doing well on San Juan worm/ nymph.

Gotta love Mondays. One of my friends and I shared the outlet hole with only 2 others. Caught several at the whistle on brown jig, sculpin jig and rainbow rooster tail. Friend took several on various woolies with spinner. Whenever he swapped colors on the wooly seemed like he could catch a few more. About 8 am the trout really started on the surface. Called the wife and she showed up with fly rod in hand and proceeded to wear them out. Again on the Adams. Again some browns, including one about 15 in were taken.

Tuesday was a repeat of Monday mostly. Hate to report saw two older gentlemen in zone 2 ripping out limits on cheese late in the day. Trying to hide it by having it in their vests but every one caught swallowed it. I went to the hatchery but the one worker I found just shrugged. I went back and called them out on it after they were still fishing with four on their stringers. I assume to hi grade. They just grabbed there stuff and headed to the parking lot. Oh well,,,

This morning was unreal. I was the only one from the dam to the bridge and caught some real nice rainbows on glo balls. Weird to have the whole stream to yourself at the whistle!2afabs.jpg

Thanks for the report.  I love fishing there during the week.  We caught a few short browns as well last time we were down there.  Heading down this weekend, hopefully the top water action keeps up.

Wife and I fished Sunday and stayed in zone 2 with the wind being pretty stout most of the day. We did catch a lot of fish with maybe 20 little brown trout in the mix. As with Allstar's report we did notice a couple instance of folks fishing in zone 2 with baits that weren't legal. One family of a Mom,Dad, and 3 small children were sitting on the bank throwing power nuggets and catching a few fish. I spoked to the Dad as I assumed it was still an illegal bait in zone 2. He assured me he was not breaking in law so I walked on by not wanting to create a scene with 3 little kids looking to be less than 6-7 years old. Another guy fishing on the Whistle Bridge with the old rubber tube jig told me they told him at the park store it was legal in zone 2 when they sold it to him. He hadn't caught any thing so we fixed him up with something that was legal and he had caught 3 by the time I left. Maybe should have went to look for a conservation officer but rarely have any success finding one.

Saturday some jack wagon was standing at the outlet in the high bank hole actually netting fish with a hand net and keeping them.

It simply amazes me that I can walk around at any given time and see numerous rules violations being broken. Yet, there isn't an agent anywhere close to ticket these offenders.

I guess they're too busy watching for nudity and alcohol violations on the river.?

What is it that y'all love so much about that place?   Not trying to kick off any drama, I just would like to hear how the positives outweigh the negatives for some people.

It's one of the few places I can put my camper year round without having to haul it all over.  Generally most of the problems are from locals, from what I can tell.

Their attitudes are that they live there so they can do what they want.  If it wasn't for the knuckleheads breaking rules and out right lack of respect it would be an awesome place to be. As it stands, I have a good time most times.  My friends are there also. The positives outweigh the negatives.  So I stick around.

Dont you think it would be better if something would be done about the bad stuff?? Yes it's easier just to move on, but why not bring attention to the issues???

To each their own.

Don't actually love the place anymore and doubt we will go back more than one time this year. It is an easy pace for the Mrs. to wade fish and Montauk hasn't been anywhere up to what it usually is. Wife really enjoyed the day and I ended up helping a couple other youngsters catch fish. One was jig fishing off the whistle bridge and another was beating the water with his new fly rod. That made it a positive day for me and a good day for those I helped.

Since it's your home away from home maybe there's a number you could add to contacts. Become a pillar of the community and start reporting the violations you witness.   If no attention is given to your reports thru the season then attend the yearly meeting and raise hell about it.

I guarantee that's where I would be also!!  If you have a choice of getting a free shot or mess with a "jackwagon" it's a no brainer.

I say we start taking pics of the violators and start a wall of shame on here!!

Actually I believe the conservation agents cell numbers and names are posted on Weavers site.

I'm with you NoLuck, it's very convenient for me as well.  I have friends that I have made over the years that I like to see and harass.  Actually if the pull wasn't so far I would prefer to go to Montauk.  For me it's a good 5 to 6 hour pull where BSSP is 3.5 hours.  Plus like you (NoLuck) and Upstream, I have fond memories from my childhood of that place.  It's not the same as it was but it's still Bennett.

Thanks for the report Allstar1

Maybe I will see you guys this weekend?

Well I'm sure there won't be now since the conservation gets on here and reads these posts. That's one thing I don't do and will never do is get  in to another Fisherman's business. Maybe what they're doing is not right but I've never seen it my place to go see anything about it. To each his own I guess.
