merc1997 Bo Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 finally had a chance to get out and see if i remember how to set the hook. it has been just about three weeks since i have been. we put in around 8pm and fished until 1am. things started out as usual, a hunting expedition. i had not caught one bass that had spawned, and am not for sure if i still have. every bass we caught were completely without one blemish and fat, even the k's. every bass we caught came off an area with an extended shelf that went out to around 20 ft. deep and then went right off into deeper water. most bites seemed to be in the 10 - 15 ft. range. pretty much where the bite was the last time i went. but, the bass were holding to different terrain than earlier. we caught them on two baits. one was a beaver type bait on a 3/8 jig head, and the other choice was a 1/2 Elite and a small chunk type trailer. similar in size to a #11 chunk. ended up with 8 keeps and they were all really nice chunks from 17 to 19 inches. so, they would have been an easy 3 lb. average. we did catch a few shorts, but do not think more than 6. one thing that i did notice when we put in was that there were small shad pods everywhere out in the lake. did not see any activity on them though. bo Quillback, dan hufferd, Mitch f and 2 others 5
m&m Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Bo, you are really dialed in on those night time haunts. well done. Mike
SplitG2 Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Bo - thanks for the report. If you don't mind sharing, was there anything special about the different terrain in the 10-15' range or was it pretty clean? David

David the one thing different was that it was more of a flat tappering shelf that extended out some distance before have a major drop. the boat was sitting in 25 to 30 ft. and it was a 1 1/2 cast to bank. i really think these bass were daytime shad chasers that had went and laid down. since we do not have any trees anymore, i believe that most bottom bass one can find are some that are resting from roaming after shad. the really active bass are those that are up chasing shad or at least roaming with them. these resting bass are very hard to get to bite, and this is where fishing the correct depth and speed is very critical. if you have a fishing partner, it is very wise to each be throwing something different, and you can more quickly dial in what is needed to get bites. bo SplitG2, Hammer time and dtrs5kprs 3

Channel out behind, flat mixed rock shelf. Fish in 10'-15', but near 90+. Ned and a tube. Just gorged on shad. SplitG2 1

bobby b. Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Bo, I went the last two nights (for the first time ever) using the black light we discussed in a recent post. Caught a few just barely keeper spots using a black/blue jig and trailer and in most cases I thought I was stuck but the fish had swallowed the bait deep - beginners luck. I was on main lake channel bluffs in about 30 fow. Really like the black light fishing - very peaceful at night and all the lights around the lake - BUT DON'T LIKE CLEANING THE STUCK ON BUGS ALL OVER THE BOAT. Bobby 96 CHAMP 1

Bobby ever heard they saying "you can't have your cake and eat it too"?. i will put up with the bugs to have the peace and quiet. later on in the summer when you get further off shore, they bugs become less of a nuisance. were you sitting in 30 ft. or did you catch your bass 30 ft. deep. typically bass this time of the year, at night, will be caught out to 20 ft, and will typically move up as the night goes on. how much hot weather will determine just how soon the bass will make another change and make another depth change. bo Hammer time 1

I was pretty much vertical fishing as my black light and my old eyes could not see the line very far. I will get the light you suggested in a while if I decide to stay with the night time fishing. I like fishing at first light as well so I'm needing to nap during the day. Retirement is killing me. Bobby
