Gavin Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 Ness, I would look in Oak & Hickory woods...usually on a sloped spot where the hill drains. BilletHead 1
ness Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 Thanks guys. I've never even had them, so I bought some dried ones the other day. Goinna have them with a steak tonight, I think. John
BilletHead Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 The ones I dehydrated turn out a bit rubbery when reconstituting for using. Let me know what yours are like Ness please. ness Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 I will let you know how it goes. Other dried mushrooms were rubbery for me, so I know what you mean. John
Johnsfolly Posted July 23, 2016 Author Posted July 23, 2016 Ness If you have been getting consistent rains like we have been the last couple of weeks then you should be able to find chanterelles. Look in the areas the Gavin and BH suggest. I also have been finding them on benches below a wooded slope. Once I do find a patch, I like to look along the same elevation on the slope instead of down or up slope. It seems to me that the mycelia grows horizontally and not vertically along the slope. Kind of like trolling a contour at the same depth you found fish. This is a fishing forum. BilletHead, Gavin and ness 3
ness Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 oops. Moved to 'What's Cooking' thread tho1mas, BilletHead and Johnsfolly 3 John
BilletHead Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 Yea I thought you might not like the dried chants. Other types are supposed to be better. I have some dried hen of the woods I may try to see what they might be like. I really liked what I did with the dried chants on the whats cooking thread. IT was fine! Johnsfolly Posted July 23, 2016 Author Posted July 23, 2016 I like to cook with dried porcinis. I will soak them in hot water to reconstitute. Mostly do that for the intense flavored liquor than the actual mushroom. Then i use the liquor and mushrooms as a braising liquid for shortribs or squirrel, etc. Real interested in grinding any dried chants in sauces like BH did for his tomato sauce. BilletHead 1
Johnsfolly Posted July 30, 2016 Author Posted July 30, 2016 Follysbetterhalf picked up this hat for me when we where at Onondaga Cave state park last weekend beating the heat. Looks like a new foraging hat indeed. In case you can't read the phases from the picture they are: Be down to Earth Start from the ground up Spawn new ideas Be a Fun Guy!
