Without the benefit of an ice house or a heater or much other than a bucket to sit on. Wax worms for bait. No ice rod, just lightest spinning rig I had. A good auger is a must. Never drove on the ice but did fear falling through a few times. Schnapps and beer, not whiskey. No card games either. Would do it the right way given the opportunity. Sold all my ice stuff years ago. Ice is too sketchy here around KC. Had a hut, auger, graph box. All the Yankee trappings. Stone cold boring. Terrierman 1

I sure wasn't bored when I landed a walleye through the ice that was 12 lbs 2 oz on a certified scale. Also was never bored just drinking beer and playing cards in an ice shack, but I guess some people consider that stuff boring.

During a cold winter, people start driving vehicles on the ice in December and will continue to drive vehicles on the ice until early April. Sometimes the lakes are locked up in ice until early May.

But at least we're not talking about golf!

But at least we're not talking about golf! Hey Man, fishing is fishing. No complaints here. i actually enjoy golf. I played a lot growing up and still have all the gear. I prefer to spend my limited time fishing. I do hate seeing a a fishing thread ruined by guys talking fancy golf balls and clubs. Improve your game, Not your gear.
