Stein Posted May 2, 2017 Author Posted May 2, 2017 It's the little things that take time. Laid out, cut and fit the transom knees, laminated two 3/8" ply with epoxy. Ties in the transom, station before it, sole below and seat above. Should tie it all together into a rigid box. Still need to add water drains and air circulation holes. Going to add two more corner blocks between the plywood sides and transom. Daryk Campbell Sr and Ham 2
Stein Posted May 3, 2017 Author Posted May 3, 2017 Built some seat framing so not much visual progress so put up some current status photos. Waiting for more epoxy and fiberglass tape to show up so I can fillet and tape all of the inside joints. Johnsfolly 1
fshndoug Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 That is an awesome job .Looks like it will be a nice boat.I saw in an earlier post that you were going to paint it with a latex house paint.I would not do that as it will not work.Latex paint breathes. It is not designed to be waterproof. It will soften up and peel right off the boat.I paint apartments for a living and I am always repairing water damage to latex paint.
Deadstream Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Stein, I am leaving for Michigan for the summer. Can you have mine built before Halloween when I normally head back?
Stein Posted May 4, 2017 Author Posted May 4, 2017 Transom knees installed. snagged in outlet 3, Daryk Campbell Sr, BilletHead and 2 others 5
Stein Posted May 9, 2017 Author Posted May 9, 2017 MVP (Major Visual Progress) has been slow coming so no responses in a couple of days. Spent a couple of days filleting and taping every seam and joint. Then flipped it over and finally rolled on the first of three graphite-filled epoxy layers tonight. Two more to go then flip and sand and epoxy coat the inside before paint. Johnsfolly, Daryk Campbell Sr, BilletHead and 1 other 4
JF660R Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 I vote clear coat. More like that barrel back you posted. Deadstream 1 https://www.facebook.com/pages/Nocturnal-FabWorx/346443168872812 Like Nocturnal FabWorx on Facebook
Gavin Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 Looks good enough for the epoxy to show. Can always paint it after a couple years of use.
Stein Posted May 9, 2017 Author Posted May 9, 2017 The bottom will always be the graphite black. The graphite will be jet black when all three coats are on and it is actually a wear resistant surface. The first coat you can still see color and weave through it. Interior will be be painted a sand color and dark blue on the two outside panels, bow and transom. Going to go oil based paint now. They carry Rustoleum Topsides oil based marine paint at Menards.
Gavin Posted May 9, 2017 Posted May 9, 2017 The graphite coat works pretty well. Buddy of mine has it on the cedar strip canoe he built a couple years ago, and its holding up well.
