Members Chunk Rock Posted June 28, 2017 Members Posted June 28, 2017 Any thoughts on using a yellow braid with a clear fluorocarbon leader on Tablerock. Local tackle store sells a one shot spool in yellow or green.
merc1997 Bo Posted June 28, 2017 Posted June 28, 2017 me personally, would not bother with a leader. to me, the only difference line makes regardless of color is the size and type, which affects your sink rate or depth lures such as crankbaits can attain. i know other folks let that "visble" line get into their heads, but i maintain that if a fish can reason that there is something bad about line, they can see the hook just as well, and that is what is actually causing the problem. so, why would they ever bite anything with a hook??? just my assessment. bo Royal Blue, Ellros and gurzik 3
m&m Posted June 28, 2017 Posted June 28, 2017 Bo I agree. There is nothing more visible than the wires of an A-rig. Yet fish don't seem to mind. No leaders for me either. It just adds weak spots between me and the hook. IMHO Mike big c 1

I loved being able to see the line better and see the subtle twitch that I might have missed otherwise.(my eyesight is not the greatest anymore) - Regarding reaction baits; as mentioned above, a leader might not be necessary. - I strayed from the high-vis braid and leader; just out of pure laziness. I don't get to fish much like I used too; little ones at home have life very hectic. So when I do get out to fish anymore; I try and simplify, possibly to my detriment........but it is what it is at the moment.:-) Daryk Campbell Sr 1
MOPanfisher Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 The worst line I ever owned was some black braid, that crap was almost invisable. I stick with high visibility braid of whatever brand you like. After a few years of tying directly to the jig/lure I have for the last year or so been trying to use a mono leader simply because it takes rock abuse better than braid does. Honestly I think my ineptness in rigging the leader has cost me more fish and tackle than I ever lost due to weak spots in the braid. I have no problems catchin crappie, walleye, goggle eye or smallies with bright colored braid. merc1997 Bo 1

I tie direct on tw,sb, and most lures that don't come in contact with the bottom. Braid has sooo many advantages over mono or fluorocarbon (feel, durability, distance, no memory, ect.). I do use a fluorocarbon leader on jigs, dropshot or any bait that will contact the bottom. Braid's only downfall is that it will get nicked on rocks. I use 6-8 lb on dropshot, 10-14 on jigs and 17-20 flipping. I use green braid, but think it's a matter of preference. If you're a line watcher yellow might be a better choice.
dblades Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 I have a couple of rods loaded with hi visibility braid for my none fishing friends.
fowlthing Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 I am surprised so many do not use a leader with braid. Makes me reconsider what I am doing. I use a leader for my ned rig and really like the visibility of the braid and the sink rate of the flourocarbon leader. But it may not be any better...certainly adds a step. I also like that It breaks off at the bait when I get hung up bad... With the uni knot I have not had issues with the leader coming off. I have had issues with braid on my baitcasting reels.... when I do get a backlash it is miserable.. but like it on the spinning rods.
m&m Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 fowlthing, I never use a leader. I only use braid for topwater cause it floats. On all other reels I use fluorocarbon cause it sinks. I also only use a palomar knot. That set up works well for me. But I agree with others that it is a matter of preference. Also as I replace rods I continue to upgrade to those that provide me a better feel so I can detect the slightest tick of the line. My hope is that it helps me become a better fisherman. Or I could have just got a jersey and looked really cool. lol Mike Quillback and Champ188 2
