slothman Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Somebody told me that they eat bass eggs. I have no idea if that is true. Anyone with more knowledge than me know anything about it? It sounds to me kinda like the "turkeys stomp quail eggs" theory. I've heard that one a bunch, but I've never seen any scientific evidence of it. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen though.
MrGiggles Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Up north it is common practice to jab them in the head with a screwdriver and toss them back in the lake. They call 'em sheep's head. Not condoning it, but that's what I've seen done in Minnesota, where I'm from. -Austin
slothman Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 I've heard of that as well. I never knew until recently that they were so hated. I always kinda liked catching them because they put up such a fight. They can be annoying when you are really targeting something though, I suppose.

Do they fillet up like a crappie or walleye? Not my style but the Chinese way is to cut them up in 1" chunks, bones and all and steam them with ginger slices and green onions. They finish it with a soy sauce type of sauce Johnsfolly 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor

I have seen shad follow white bass while they spawned sucking up eggs, I would say most any fish eats eggs if they can, sunfish big time! its what daddy bass guards the nest.....lots of times over harvest of bass, walleyes etc, gets blamed on fish eating up the eggs-n-fry....when in reality its billy and bubba filling their ice chest with fillets..Drum are great eating no floating bones, no nasty blood lines....a firm sweet white meat...I think I may go catch some to try a red fish recipe this weekend...I like them better that store bought tilapia 9 hours ago, MrGiggles said: Up north it is common practice to jab them in the head with a screwdriver and toss them back in the lake. Walcrabass Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 MoCarp, You are correct. Drum are good to eat. Cubed and deep fried or baked. I like my own tarter sauce when they are deep fried. Mayonnaise, Horse Radish, and Garlic Salt. Very tasty fish. Cavendars Greek seasoning mix with a little butter when they are baked. I catch a lot of Drum when Bass Fishing with Jig and Craw. Especially when using Craw flavored scent. You can almost always tell when it is a Drum bite as they seem to push it around on the bottom. Walcrabass Johnsfolly 1
MOPanfisher Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 I am kind of liking the idea of cubing the fillets up and boiling in crab boil then serve with a spicy seafood sauce or even a sweet chili sauce. Johnsfolly, Hunter91 and MoCarp 3
Members Cabezon Posted August 3, 2017 Members Posted August 3, 2017 I tried cubing the fillets and boiling them with Old Bay seasoning added to the water. Then dipping them in cocktail sauce. I prefer coating them with yellow cornmeal and Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning and deep frying them. MoCarp, blacknoseddace and MOPanfisher 3
