Felt boots are cheap now, and I still like them. Don't know about the fines. Remember how they told everyone to use soaking layers of contact cement to make them legal? I prefer to use felt also and do so anywhere I am able. The sheer amount of western streams with polished granite and quartz boulders are very dangerous and even some are covered with silt and river growth felt is still slick. Small built in spikes do help but if you don't plant you foot right ant they slip it is like ice skates. If it wasn't for felt I am sure I would of sprained an ankle or broken something for time spent on the rocky environment. We have as Al suggested purchased some of the Water Tennies high top version that has some ankle support for wet wading out West in the Summer month we go. We learned our lesson when we were in Jones Hole fishing for nine hours in wet neoprene socks and wading boots. Our feet felt like wet hamburger. Hoping these shoes and drain faster between getting in and out of the water to give the feet a rest. The Water Tennies are supposed to have soles like rock climbers use.
