Well I guess it would have been better above the lake for me last Saturday.

Doubtful.   It always got grim up there once it got cold.  Winter Smallie fishing in rivers is an Ozarks thing.  Ya gotta have fairly clear water or you're probably gonna get skunked.

As long as it stays warm enough to wet wade up there you're good to go.  I don't ever remember a day in waders where I did very good.

The problem with said flowage is that they generate so abruptly and often that you could literally have  8-9 foot rise in one day and back down to darn near nothing the next day. And I never got hold of a reliable phone number to ask. Too unpredictable for me.

LOL.  I never waded or canoed the Salt, always had a motorboat for it.

I learned to waterski on the Salt River. Dad's favorite thing to do was dump me in a boggy ol' backwater where it was creepy to swim.   See where my sense of humor comes from?

So the best place to fish for smallies is downstream of cannon dam is what I’m reading 😂

For the effort to drive to there from Columbia, I would say you could drive the same distance south and find a lot of truly good smallmouth water. Unless you're just checking off places you've caught a smallie and want to add that to the list....

I didn't experience any "truly good" days this year, did you?

I betcha if I had run up to my old stomping grounds in Monroe county I'd have had a truly good day. :)   No angler pressure, no giggers, no float partiers.....and plenty of stupid hungry fish.   Plus I would have gotten to see some bullfrogs.

No bullfrogs in the Ozarks :(

I had what is for me a couple of good days, but that's all relative. Maybe we should run up there, that's kinda my old stomping grounds too. Still got kin up there.

Let's do that!   I need to visit home.  I've forgotten what it's like to spend a week on the river and not see anyone.
