Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted June 6, 2018 Root Admin Posted June 6, 2018 Twenty-four hours just isn't enough time to do all the things I want to do. Even getting up at 4:30 am, I'm still short time and energy. Anyhow... I started playing gold at an early age. We belonged to the Parsons Country Club and my parents would drop me off at the club lots of days in the summer. Of course there was a creek that ran through the place and I had my fishing pole with me too. Never had a lesson.... wish I did. Started with a slice and never could get rid of it until the last few years. I've force myself to keep my hands inside by changing my grip, stance and back swing. I'm hitting my driver pretty good now. My short irons have always been consistently good. I can putt but can't read a green. But my medium to long irons are my downfall. Anything outside of 150 yards, I have problems. I own a couple of hybrids, a 21 and a 23 degree. I hit those much better than an iron - I think it's a mental thing. So I've ordered a couple more hybrids - an Adams 25 and 28 degree. I'm thinking these may just replace all my irons between a 3 and 6. Anyone else have issues with long irons? Do you do better with hybrids?
Deadstream Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 I can hit them all equally horrible. Phil Lilley and Daryk Campbell Sr 2
slothman Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 I used to hit long irons to a 2 iron. I got new clubs a couple of years ago and went with a 2 hybrid and 3 hybrid. I hit the ball just like I would with an iron, but I find the hybrid a bit more forgiving. I am more consistent with the long hybrids. It is especially better when hitting out of the rough. I hit ping G25s and have been very happy with them.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 I remember taking my 2 iron out of the bag in the 90's. Hybrids are a game changer for sure. Pros use em. Best advice is to hit clubs "outside" before you buy them. I know it's difficult but I only bought clubs from a demo day. It is eye opening when you can hit several brands with various shafts. I've picked up clubs that I could hit right away and others I couldn't hit at all. Makes a huge difference later when you try to adjust your swing to a club that doesn't really fit you or your swing for whatever reason. I watched this all the time. A buddy orders a club online and proceeds to shank, scuff, duff, skull and lay the sod over on every shot he tries. The club just doesn't fit him. I say hit them outside because a trackman doesn't give you true visual of what the ball is doing. We're lucky here in St Louis as they have several demo days a year. Phil Lilley 1
slothman Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 The set of irons I just got is my first set custom fitted to me. Wow! What a difference that has made. My consistency is sooo much better. I have dropped quite a few strokes just with having the better, custom-fitted clubs. snagged in outlet 3 and Phil Lilley 2
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted June 6, 2018 Author Root Admin Posted June 6, 2018 Not sure I'm ready for custom fit clubs... would mean I'd have to play more to justify it. I bought these used off Amazon so I'm not out a bunch if they don't work. HAHA - if "they" don't work. Deadstream and ness 1 1
snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 Understandable. I've bought clubs from buddies that I could hit first. I've basically quit the game, only played once in 3 years now. I even passed on a couple work deals this past two weeks. I used to card 100-120 rounds per year since I was a kid. Just lost interest for a variety reasons.

I just had to wait for them to come in after getting fitted. Phil Lilley and snagged in outlet 3 2
Smalls21 Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 i used to swing 34/28 easton, but now as i have gotten older i have switched to Demarini 34/24, i get a little more distance with an end load Deadstream, Lancer09 and Phil Lilley 2 1
Bushbeater Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 Whens the Ozark Anglers Bad Golfers Tournament? I sure Johnny Morris would offer us the use of one of his courses and up a Nitro to spice up the deal. As for the hybrids they will surely help your game, although I've had some bigger ones almost pull me outta the boat. Greasy B, Phil Lilley and slothman 3
