My first college course was taught by a limnology major, a lake isn't like a glass of water with everything consistent. 

I was thinking the same thing myself, carbon monoxide poisoning, or lack of oxygen, when it happens to humans you just pass out and, in the case of carbon monoxide, die.  I'm thinking there was a sudden change in oxygen levels, fish couldn't react to it, and they died.  

Or maybe not, but that's what I'm going with.

I had a GF like that, didn't know the answer but was sure you were wrong.  Makes for a hard relationship.

That's some good science right there, boy!   If by chance it's accurate then it is indeed incomplete. 😅
