I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with the lower end of Crane creek where it meets the James river??? My wife and I are going to look at a piece of property that has the last 1/2 mile of the creek and a mile of river frontage of the James there.

There is an access called Kerr below the property that looks like it has a pig farm adjacent to it???...which scares me some.

Is there anything else in this area I should be aware of???.... I am meeting a surveyor tomorrow to  get a better idea of the land situation.

Is the fishing any good on the James down that far?? The property is accessed thru another farm who owns the next 1.5 miles above this on Crane, up to a Cemetery.

I think I will be re visiting my fly fishing addiction if this deal goes thru :)

any local knowledge of what may be an issue would be a big help and would give you full access to my possible future land purchase :)

It's an area I'm very fond of. Kerr is a put in for James River Outfitters and can get very busy during the summer. But I still love it. Smallmouth fishing is good but you are going to have to learn to love some spots.

Crane down that far is going to be more smallmouth water than trout.

I'm not real familiar with the area, but I put my kayak in one time on Crane Creek at Hwy AA. I floated into the James and down to Galena. When I arrived near the confluence of where Crane meets the James, there was a log over the creek. I crossed the log and there was a deer standing nearby that I watched for awhile. Threw a popper out with my fly rod. As I was distracted by the beauty of the area, I felt a lot of pressure on my rod. I immediately thought that I was snagged, but pulled in the nicest smallmouth I had ever caught with a popper (on accident!)  Definitely a beautiful place!

In my opinion, the best water on the James is from Hootentown  to Highway V.  And again from Horse Creek (Kerr) most of the way to Galena.  Since you are used to fishing around St. Louis, the summertime crowds that the James surely sees will probably be tolerable to you.  Be sure you have easement to get to and from the property.  And be kind to the people you meet.  Wouldn't want to start any feuds or anything.
