In streams I let them fall and then bounce down through the current for a bit.  Usually doesn't take long if they want it though.

Same here. Probably the easiest way to catch river smallmouth.

In the late 80's early 90's my dad was a bit of a gitzit guru on Stockton. He caught tons of smallmouth on those things. I was never even close to being as good as he was with them. But he would pop them off the bottom and let them float back down to the bottom watching for that line to do something different on the fall. He had some success dragging them around too.

I've had success dragging them on the deep gravel flats on Table Rock.
