Champ188 Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 I use 6-pound mono exclusively on my spinning rods. Shaky head and Ned are pretty much the only things I throw on them. Grub on occasion in the winter. Best mono I have found for this use is BPS Excel in the green tint. Tough stuff and isn't bad about coiling when stored. Pull it behind the boat once a trip to get the twists out and you're ready to go next time. I change it about every 3-4 trips. Not because it's worn but because at $9.99 for 1,500 yards, it's just easier to respool than mess with old line. Right now, it's $6.69 for that 1,500 yard spool . I won't argue that fluorocarbon might be a bit more sensitive and I wouldn't think of using anything but quality carbon (Sunline Sniper or Trilene 100% FC) on my baitcasting tackle for jigs and other "feel" lures. But I'm stuck on mono for spinning apps. I just don't trust myself not to rear back too hard and snap light-test FC. In the words of comedian Ron White … "I've seen me do it." Six pound test is six pound test, spinning gear never gets hard hook sets for me.

Mono has far more stretch than FC and will absorb a harder hookset. I said I don't trust myself not to set the hook too hard sometimes. I haven't yet achieved perfection. MOPanfisher Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 I am a hook setter from way back. With braid when I set the hook, even on crappie you will heal the drag screech. I finally learned to loosen the drag with braid, I can very quickly use a finger to add drag if needed should I hook into something with more muscle. magicwormman 1
abkeenan Posted February 27, 2019 Posted February 27, 2019 I'm a co-poly (hybrid) guy. I prefer 8lb Yozuri Hybrid for my spinning gear. Think that is marries a nice blend of the assets of both mono and fluoro. Stuff is strong, soft and fairly abrasion resistant. Been using it for about 5+ years on the fairy wand set up and see no reason to abandon it. Before that I used PLine Fluoroclear which I also like but prefer the Yozuri over it. Think is has a little less stretch, less memory and holds a knot better. I bought some 4lb Fluoroclear for trout/panfish and for whatever reason I felt the knot would slip a lot at that diameter with that line.
Members Jordan Green Posted February 27, 2019 Members Posted February 27, 2019 I'm a Braid guy with a fluro leader on spinning set ups. I really like the #20 Hi-Viz Power Pro with #8 Sunline Assassin Leader. I like the sensitivity of the braid a lot. liphunter, Champ188 and magicwormman 3
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Why use (x) line with (x) leader? I understand some of the reasons for choosing line, but other than fly fishing, I never understood a leader. And if so, do you tie it directly to the lure? Luck is where preparation meets opportunity...... Or you could just flip a coin???
MOPanfisher Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 I always buy high visibility braid of some version. The reason I use a leader is because the braid doesn't handle rocks etc well and abrade easily. The mono leader handles it much better. liphunter 1

(In Missouri) Leaders with braid because I've had zero luck with braid on bottom dragging rigs. Good mono and fluorocarbon both have better abrasion resistance. Champ188 and liphunter 2
