Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 31, 2019 Root Admin Posted May 31, 2019 I think I'm ready to pursue an app for OA but I need input. I'm not very versed on apps really, but I have an idea what it may look like. First, is there any fishing apps out there we can pattern off of? I guess it would have sections with favorite waters, fishing reports for those waters and other information. It would work with the forum in some way... I have a guy in Springfield that builds apps but I'm open to suggestions.
fishinwrench Posted May 31, 2019 Posted May 31, 2019 A journal would be good. I find that the best journal for me is simply a few dated pics. Once I see the pics I immediately remember everything I need to know about that day (or time period) short of lake/river level and water temp (if it matters). No need to type out a bunch of crap, just scan the June's of the past and boom....your head is automatically programmed with all past successes and failures during that season. netboy Posted June 1, 2019 Posted June 1, 2019 Phil... Check out Dally's Ozark Fly Fisher App. It is what I use while out on the river. trythisonemv 1
mixermarkb Posted June 1, 2019 Posted June 1, 2019 +1 on the journal, if it could grab local weather data from one of the online weather websites, and save time from having to enter all of that in, it would be great. Same with lake level and current information. Maybe partner with Angler Spy for temp and lake level info? A simple one click fish counter that would run in the background , open immediately when you wake the app, and log the catch and GPS location, and give you the option to snap a pic, or enter fish size, would be killer. Key here being its got to be fast enough for me to click and log the catch, and still get a bait back into a bunch of schooling fish. Most fishing apps I've tried just were too many clicks or menus to simply log a catch, so I ended up just fishing and not messing with the app, and not getting accurate journal entries because of it. Giving the option to edit that journal entry, hide information that one didn't want to share, and easily make a forum post would be helpful. It's also a bit of a goofy idea, but maybe could include something like a daily MLF style pics and or weight contest for any OA members who opted in for that body of water that day, or a least a fish of the day "bragging rights" section for that day. Is a Bluetooth enabled scale a thing? It might be fun to know who else was fishing that day, and how they did. Daryk Campbell Sr 1

But it's nice. What about having an app for every fishing hole... I won't cover every water on the forum, just the well used ones. May start with Table Rock Lake and see what happens. trythisonemv and Daryk Campbell Sr 2

Apps today are pretty much websites and that's the trend for how people want to consume information. This may be way beyond what you want to mess with, but I would incorporate One Cast type videos into the mix and an online store. Many times when watching One Cast or reading a fishing report forum post I wish it was easier to see a good close up of the jig, jerk bait, or fly. Duane's short video tutorial of how to tie the scuds for drifting is a perfect example of the type of specific informational videos I am thinking of. I am a novice compared to most of you and even though I have been fishing for 35 years I don't understand some of the rigs or colors people are using these days. People want to see stuff these days and not read. My kids want to see video. When they can't see something they don't understand why and that's just where things are going. Furthermore, the ability to buy that jig or jerk bait would be something that interests me. Sure, when I am down next I'll be in the shop to buy jigs, bottom rigs, etc; but I would rather have it now so my box is ready to go when I get to Branson next time. Daryk Campbell Sr Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 I like the simplicity of the MO Outdoors app. A GPS enabled map is included. An OA app, may have species of fish links, or make fishing locations as a menu. It could have a journal that was only available to the user, with the option of making individual entries public. I like the suggestion of current water level and temp. An option for products for purchase sounds neat, or a cart option for when someone arrives at Lilley's Landing. Kind of a wishlist of sorts. I agree with more visual than text. Short attention spans nowadays. Phil Lilley 1 Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. snagged in outlet 3 Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 I still hand write my journal. Been looking for something quicker. mixermarkb 1

Yeah, I have 32 years worth of hand written journals. Way back a buddy compiled about 10 years worth of mine, and all of his combined, on FLOPPY DISKS. Guess how useful that is ? 😂 Now I can just go back through the years and look at May's or June's and say "oh yeah I suddenly remember every detail of that flippin' bite". Phil Lilley 1
