I also know I had not caught a true striper from LOZ for over a decade until 2 years ago, and there are enough of them now they are running in schools of just true stripers, all the same size. Mike I have experienced the same, but it isn't to MDC's credit. They are doing what fish do NATURALLY.

Members PT 20 Posted October 1, 2019 Members Posted October 1, 2019 Wrench, any guess on how old this beast was. It went 39 inches and weighed 29 pounds. I caught it on the Big Niangua in June of 2017. FishnDave 1
fishinwrench Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 I don't know what the average growth rate is for Stripers, but I would assume 6-7 years on that one. Nice! 👍
fishinwrench Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 I ain't believing it. Why no stripers in Truman ? If they are breeding stripers then it's only for hybrid brood stock. If it was a significant amount then they would openly mention STRIPERS as a species available to be sought after on Lake O.....and they don't, now do they? My wife and I are going on a field trip to Lost Valley with my daughter next month, and if given an opportunity (without disrupting the activity for the kids) I'll see if I can find out. There's really no sense in me inquiring about it because odds are I am not going to believe it if they tell me that they actively stock Striped bass in numbers that would matter. I freakin' live here and I know better. They don't stock Musky either....but lookie here ! Question:. Where else do they claim to stock Striped Bass ?

I'm not one of you guys that considers what I am told as an education. I didn't learn what I know about outboard motors from the instructors at MMI, and I challenge you to find someone that will claim (even in private conversation) that I suck at it. 😊 I'll be the first one to admit that all these certificates don't mean jack !
MOPanfisher Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Oddly enough I learn a LOT from people who tell me stuff. Some I get the opportunity to confirm some I take on faith, some I have doubts about. Wisdom (which I struggle with) is knowing which to do when. As I recall at least for a while the state record muskie was from LOZ, due to an incident with a stocking truck that had a break down of some sort and rather than lose them the crew opted to dump them into a creek that leads to LOZ. Story I heard was that they were told that if it happens again to let the fish die rather than stock them in waters where they weren't supposed to be. True or not, no clue but it is a good story. fishinwrench 1

The secretary or hatchery tech that will give the tours will most likely know little about where the fish are stocked and when. The only other lake that I am aware MDC stocks is the portion of bull shoals in MO. Here is a quote from the Lake of the ozarks convention bureau with quotes from Greg Stoner, it's been several years since I talked to him, but he mentioned they were stocking aroun 150,000 per stocking when I lived on the lake. https://www.lakeexpo.com/news/lake_news/get-a-line-on-great-year-round-fishing-at-lake/article_5bb4bc1d-9fb7-57ef-88e5-6715e66fe35f.html "Most of the Lake species are naturally abundant; however, the Lake’s stock of walleye and paddlefish come from the Department of Conservation’s Lost Valley Hatchery near Warsaw, on the east side of the Lake. Stoner explains, “When the Truman Dam was built in the late 1970s, it cut off the historical spawning areas for those fish, so we supply them from the hatchery.” It’s the largest warm-water, state-owned hatchery in Missouri and one of the 10 largest in the nation. Its fascinating Visitors Center features a 12,700-gallon aquarium, a viewing area into the hatchery production room and exhibits about Missouri marine life. The MDC also releases two “bonus fish” into the Lake of the Ozarks: hybrid striped bass every other year and pure striped bass every fifth year. “The pure striped bass is a saltwater fish that can survive in fresh water,” Stoner says. “We started stocking them because they can get very big and they’re super predators that can consume the bigger shad that grow in the Lake.” You freakin live there, you know better..... As far as that muskie. It was stocked...in pomme de terre...which flows to truman then LOZ. Stockers love to wander. I guarantee it's not the only one to be caught out of LOZ. You can ask Greg about that fish too, and the threadfin shad, and the hybrid stripers, and any of the other fish conspiracies you believe in. Edit: Greg Stoner addressed the LOZ muskies in this in-fisherman article. https://www.in-fisherman.com/editorial/lake-of-the-ozarks-muskie/156543 I don't hassle you about the outboards, cause I don't claim to know anything about them. I know fish since I've worked hands on in fisheries research for 10+ years and spend far too much time fishing. I'll point out the facts when needed so you aren't dumbing down the readers of this forum with misinformation. What certificates? What the hell does that have to do with stripers? fishinwrench 1
