Lures to lure people, or fish ?

Reminds me of a guy who wanted to see how ridiculous he could be catching coho salmon in Washington State.  He ended up using a hotdog--and was successful.

I just realized that I should clarify this  bit-- the guy was fishing in the ocean, and he wasn't chucking out a chunk of dog and waiting for a coho to come over and bite.  Because these salmon are highly active when feeding, the general approach is to troll something--often enough a herring that is either cut in a "plug" style or whole. The baits are rigged on two-hook leaders to spin, usually fairly fast.  And that's what the guy did with the hotdog-- he cut the face of it so that it would spin when trolled and then played with hooking it.

Kinda calls into question whether the highly realistic lure shapes and colors are really necessary, don't it?  I've always maintained that super realism is not necessary at all in bass lures, because bass don't stop and question whether the thing looks like a real critter, they just see it moving and decide to try eating it because it looks alive and small enough to swallow.  Still, some movements and actions that the lure naturally produces due to its shape or construction are probably better attractors than you'd get from a simple block of wood.  Of course lures are designed as much to catch fishermen as bass, but that doesn't mean that they aren't better at catching bass than a block of wood.

 It's a fact that fish don't buy lures, and it's a fact that anyone making lures to sell understands that.

That’s awesome.  I’ve watched several of his videos in the past and he’s a pretty amazing lure maker.  Some of the stuff I’ve seen him make was like pure art and super realistic looking.

The truth is that many good lures do not look particularly "fish-like".  The other truth is that no lure ever caught a fish hanging on a peg at the bait shop.

It is true that a bait (or fly) that will not catch a fish has yet to be produced.

My grandpa had one of these and caught several fish on it when fishing was slow and he was bored.
