snagged in outlet 3 Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Nobody told me a 55 pound trolling motor would over load the wires. I figured if a 35 pound was good a 55 is better. Still working this past weekend. No smoke but it gets hot.

jdmidwest Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Nobody likes looking at a healthy corpse in a casket. NFS lakes that are trolling motor only will nail you with a ticket if you turn the gas motor on. Pollution is the reason they don't want gas engines on them. State Park areas that are trolling motor only usually will let you load a boat with the engine, talk to the park ranger to find out. MDC ?? Have not ever fished one. Illinois has a 10 HP limit on many lakes. If you run a motor with a larger horsepower, they will ticket. Technically supposed to have gas line disconnected from motors over 10 HP in those lakes. The one we bought said it needed a direct connect since it can pull 50A and the trailer wiring was only on a 30A fuse. I just looked up the regulations on MDC conservation areas and they allow motors to be used in a no-wake speed on lakes that are 70 acres or larger so on those lakes you could use the motor to trailer. If it's 70 acres or less and it allows the use of boats only an electric motor is allowed. Doesn't say anything about using the motor to trailer on those smaller bodies of water. I would give the MDC a call to see what they say about using the motor to trailer only. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

Yes it CAN pull 50A if you hold it back, or try to drag the boat completely out of the water, but typically you're only pulling a wet boat about 2ft. (for about 7 seconds). That isn't long enough or hard enough to smoke any wires. It won't even blow a 15amp fuse if you get off the switch as soon as the bow hits the winch stand. I do it all the time with a deep V on a roller trailer. Doesn't even dim the tail lights on the truck.

I have a 1752 Jon boat with a 60/40 jet. Not exactly a light boat. Not crazy about the idea of trying to load my boat using just the wench. Puts a lot of unnecessary stress on the system. Not really meant for the sole means of loading a boat. Cant use front mounted trolling motor. Motor shaft would hit trailer. Don't intend to run gas motor for anything except loading/unloading. Think I would rather go to different lake than attempt loading using just wench. Right or wrong, I fire up the big motor to load the boat. 2060 with a 150 jet is heavy. I don't much want to blow a disc in my back or tear up a knee, and I don't care for swimming if the water is below 75°. Finger Lakes and Rocky Fork are the only electric motor only lakes that I ever fish. Haven't caught any grief from the park ranger yet. As far as using the wench to load the boat... last time I did that she stepped in the mud with her new shoes and somehow that was my fault. I didn't think I'd ever hear the end of it. fishinwrench, snagged in outlet 3 and Daryk Campbell Sr 1 2
