Hunter91 Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 As I mentioned in some posts, the crappie fishing has been good. How do you think this upcoming cooler weather will affect them? Back off deeper or pull up shallow?
liphunter Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 That's a good question. I would like to hear others peoples thoughts on that as well. I guess the rule of thumb, would be they would go deeper. But I am not sure of that. Mike Luck is where preparation meets opportunity...... Or you could just flip a coin???
FishnDave Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 Crappies love the cool weather. My experience is in Iowa, so take these observations as potentially having a strong regional bias: Crappies spend the hot summer suspended over open water, at depths that provide the most comfort in terms of light and water temperature. As the weather cools in the Fall, in my experience, crappies move higher in the water column and closer to shore. A warm spell will push them back deeper in open water, cool spells will coax them back to the shallows. They will stay very active all thru the winter, even under the ice. Johnsfolly and Hunter91 2
Members freefallin Posted October 2, 2019 Members Posted October 2, 2019 FWIW Personally I do not think you will see much change as they are following food. Fish are pretty shallow and the food is mostly going shallower. So just follow the food. All the best. olfishead Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 Gaining weight and not on a stringer. Guess I've been following the wrong kind of food lately! Johnsfolly, Hunter91 and Rootman 3
JCreek Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 Thursday 10-3: I put in too late as usual. Too many other fiddly things to do so didn't arrive until well past noon. Fellow was pulling in when I got back down from parking the truck. "I was catching bunch of bass. Had a real nice smallmouth. Then 'bout an hour ago the wind shifted and picked up then everything just shut off." Story of my fishing career. Didn't boat anything. Not even a moss. Lemme know when it picks back up.
MrGiggles Posted October 4, 2019 Posted October 4, 2019 As the water cools shad will move up into creek arms looking for warm water. Crappie will follow. Once the water dips below 60 they will start retreating to deeper water. liphunter 1 -Austin

Then the bite will be pretty steady and they will be in a feeding frenzy until the water dips below 45 degrees and that’s when they will migrate to to their “winter pattern” from what I’ve experienced over the years. And the majority will be in or around deep structure near channel swings and drop offs with easy access to deep and shallow water in the winter Basschomper, FishnDave and liphunter 3
Rootman Posted October 5, 2019 Posted October 5, 2019 Put in at RB about 7 am. Went up sons creek. We ended up with 13 keepers. Water temp was 72. Caught them from 14 ft to 20 ft around stobbs. Used bagley shad colors. Dropped to the bottom and just reeled up slow. They hit on the way up. Bite was very light. They would not touch a minnow today. Didn’t slay them. But caught plenty for the frying pan. Got off the water by 2 before the rain. Hope others had some luck today. Was a nice morning to be on the water. wtr dogs and Old dog 417 2
