MNtransplant Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Gettin ready for the whites, tried some bead chain clousers tonight and I like how they turned out...cant wait to fish em! Anyone else tying with this junk weather? kjackson, FishnDave and tho1mas 3
fishinwrench Posted January 23, 2020 Posted January 23, 2020 Looking good! 👍 My experience with bead chain is that it works great for shallow water crappie, but not so good for Whites....who tend to like things moving more quickly. Your mileage may vary, let us know. MNtransplant and trythisonemv 1 1

trythisonemv Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I'll agree with wrench . My experience on the Sac system has lead me to lead eyes ( pun intended ) they get down quick in the murky water and tend to make more noise bouncing of the bottom structure. The slower sinking stuff comes in handy when the water is clearer sometimes or if you are running a two fly rig. But buy in large the lead eyes have out performed for me .
tjm Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 I have fished bead chain Clousers for black bass, in swifter water they swam basically on the top and the eyes caused disturbance. Smashing hits. So, the white bass are not surface feeders? don't think I've ever seen a live WB
kjackson Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 So here's a question-- does it matter to the white bass where the eyes are located? I know that if you tie the eyes forward toward the hook eye you get a jigging motion, but when you tie the eyes in further back toward the bend, you get more of a glide.

If you don't use a loop knot (and most guys don't) then No it probably doesn't matter. Your success with Clousers (or any other fly, really) will double, or even triple, if you attach to the tippet with a loop knot. Clousers are designed to jig. If a glide is what you want then there are way better flys for that presentation. In the late Summer when Whites go on feeding blitzes it usually doesn't matter what fly you use, so a fly like a bucktail or standard Deciever that you can cast a mile, and do it quickly with the least amount of effort, is the best choice.
