Johnsfolly Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Missouri is not known for yellow perch fishing. So it's really amazing at the size of some of the perch being caught in Bull Shoals! I'm still trying to catch my first perch of the year here in Maryland. Webster County angler breaks days-old record for yellow perch Brian Holiday of Fordland caught a 2-pound, 3-ounce yellow perch from Bull Shoals Lake. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) congratulates Brian Holiday of Fordland for becoming a state-record holder after catching a 2-pound, 3-ounce yellow perch from Bull Shoals Lake. This is the second time the record for yellow perch has been broken in 2020. “Missouri is on the very southern range for yellow perch, so records for this fish are uncommon,” said MDC Fisheries Programs Specialist Andrew Branson. “It’s even more unique that we’ve had two state-record yellow perch caught within days of each other.” Holiday caught his state-record fish from Bull Shoals Lake Jan. 27 – just three days after a 1-pound, 14-ounce record had been caught in Nodaway County. MDC staff verified Holiday’s fish’s weight using a certified scale in Springfield. Missouri state-record fish are recognized in two categories: pole-and-line and alternative methods. Alternative methods include: throwlines, limb lines, bank lines, jug lines, spearfishing, snagging, snaring, gigging, grabbing, archery, and atlatl. Fish24/7 Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 I've seen bigger come out of Bull, just not on the end of MY fishing line unfortunately .😄 Congratulations to the angler! They oughta be about ready to drop some eggs any day .I know when they do the walleye start getting more aggressive and hungry😉 snagged in outlet 3 and Johnsfolly 2
Johnsfolly Posted March 4, 2020 Author Posted March 4, 2020 Got out this evening and finally got a few perch. Nothing as big as this beast. Longest was almost 11 inches and the smallest about 8 inches. Too dark for photos😕. First fish was a small pumpkinseed. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
rps Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Yellow perch are as tasty as walleye. Do not keep the small ones. Do not keep the giants. (Unlike walleye, they are not a put and take fishery. What you catch has happened DESPITE AR or MO efforts.) BTW, they re the reason for the original firetiger colors.
Quillback Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 I was curious what the world record for a yellow perch is, and it is 4 lbs. 3 oz. Set in 1865. Looked at a couple of state records in yankee land where those things are native - didn't see any over 3 lbs. So any perch over 2 lbs. is a biggun. Johnsfolly 1
Johnsfolly Posted March 4, 2020 Author Posted March 4, 2020 Maryland state record is 2.2 lbs. Just about the same size as this fish. Quillback 1
45acp Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 I'm currently developing a yellow perch/redear sunfish/smallmouth bass pond on my property. Redear went in June of last year, followed by YP in September. Smallmouth will go in this coming September. Water temp hit 48° yesterday. If any of the 8"-10" stocker YP females made it through the winter they should be dropping ribbons any day now. snagged in outlet 3, Johnsfolly and Quillback 3

Things were giant sized. My kids had a blast catching them....

Except the one that came by accident from the hatchery with the redears, and I fished that fat little toad out as soon as I figured out he was in there. Johnsfolly and snagged in outlet 3 2
