garyw Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 Anybody use the ardent over grip? i have RA and am having trouble holding the rod. I need something larger and more "sticky". any ideas? for spinning rods only. thanks in advance.
Dutch Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 I use heat shrink tubing The Mud Hole. I like the red/black best. magicwormman 1
garyw Posted March 10, 2020 Author Posted March 10, 2020 doesn't that just seal the handle? i need to make it larger. i cant grip that small. like over sized golf grips. snagged in outlet 3 1
tjm Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 I think I'd wrap in cork or foam tape and then shrink grip it. 1/8" thick tape gives a 1/4" diameter increase and the shrink tube gives it finish and protection. Two layers could add 1/2" to the grip. https://www.mudhole.com/Components-Rod-Building/handles-grips-components/tape-cord-shrink-tubing-handles Usually I prefer smaller and longer grips than common.
garyw Posted March 11, 2020 Author Posted March 11, 2020 Oh i see now. thanks ill check into it. Dutch, sorry if i misunderstood.

Not RA, but carpal tunnel gives me fits. That's why I build fat Tennessee handles on my spin rods. I also use Wilson tennis racket grip wrap/tape from Walmart or Academy, secured fore and rear with a couple wraps of electrical tape. It's cushioned, "grippy", and adds diameter. Also about $5, so not a big loss if you don't like it. Have used it on customs, couple of factory Loomis handles, and even a baitcaster or two. magicwormman 1
tjm Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 I just had an idea, vet wrap bandaging is cheap, self adhering, tacky griping etc. easy to find locally.
moguy1973 Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Just googled how to make rod grips thicker and this looks like a cool idea using paracord and some heat shrink. Might add a little too much weight though. snagged in outlet 3 1 -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
abkeenan Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Maybe contact Lew's. They could sort you out. I believe they use Winn as their grip supplier who has been making golf grips for years. They transitioned into the fishing rod market about 5-10 years ago or so. Lots of rods now have tacky grips that are either Winn or similar too them. If you added the tape around the cork/EVA rod handle it would make it significantly larger in diameter as there is quite a bit of cushioning built into the tape grips. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Winn_Grips_Superior_Rod_Wrap/descpage-WINNGRI.html?from=gshop&gclid=CjwKCAjwmKLzBRBeEiwACCVihp46L8O-_7NluZHoMITQVBh0ki0bNGWWMugLrotMFMi8oBAiOgcT8xoC3p8QAvD_BwE

I mentioned this before when someone was have trouble with carpal tunnel from fishing. The new style of skinny grips might be the cause. Your hand is more clinched and I think it's bad for you. I have new St Croix rods that I'm think of building up like my old grips. Did it with golf clubs years ago and solved some injury problems to hands, wrist and elbows.
