wily Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 I pulled old tiller out of the barn today...and trying to get it going again. For past 7 or 8 years we’ve just been gardening in raised beds with a mantis...but thinking about having someone till me a spot...so trying to get the old clodbuster going It has about a 1/8 inch of barn dust on it...but was running when it went in bad news...had a little gas in it...gas was pretty brown...and smelled like varnish...and it had a mud dobbers nest in the air filter i got the gas old out...and filled it up with good...then syphoned it out...and still trying to get the little bit of rust type residue out of the tank. i have been trying to clean the tank...and all the dust off of it. I’m using the old gas to clean the dust off....so if there’s a bucket with black stuff in it...that’s the old gas plus dust. i know these pictures stink but I’m trying to use what I learned fixing fuel pump on old boat motor to this one...but as stupid as it sounds. I can’t figure out where the gas exits the tank. I see where I guess it’s the fuel pump is...it’s behind the muffler. But there’s no inflow...from there it has a rigid line to the carb all the cables and stuff are still flexible and in good working condition...engine oil looks good...spark plug looks good Any tips...besides pushing it in the pond?
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Take that carb apart and clean it. Im sure its gummed up pretty good, it doesnt take much on a little carb like that to clog up wily 1
wily Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 Thanks for help...I wonder how you get that dude off of there??? I’m not very mechanical

Ranger520vx Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Where should be 3 or 4 screws that hold the carburetor to the top of the fuel tank and 2 bolts that attach it to the motor take them out and lift the carburetor up and out of the tank. The rigid line you're talking about is the breather tube from the crankcase vent. The fuel pump is part of the carburetor the plate on the side of the carburetor with 4 screws holding it on in the 2nd picture is the fuel pump. The carburetor has 2 pick up tubes coming out of the bottom of it that go straight into the tank that's where it gets it's fuel. Like aarchdale said pull it off and take it apart and clean it they are simple little carbs. Also while you have it off you can remove and clean the tank. If it truly is not firing the plug you may have to pull the recoil starter cover off and clean up and check the gap on the pick up coil and may just be the plug. wily 1
MrGiggles Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 I hate those carbs. They are a basic bowl type with a diaphragm pump on the side. There's 3 or 4 screws that hold the carb to the tank. The "bowl" is made inside of the fuel tank and is next to impossible to clean, you have a hole about the size of a dime to work through. The carb will have two straws on the bottom, one goes into the tank, the other goes down into the bowl, both with screens on the bottom. That looks old enough that it may have points under the flywheel that will need attention. Have fun. I'd toss that Breaks & Scatters in the scrap pile and bolt a Predator on there before spending too much time on it. Tillers are usually worth it, as long as the running gear is in good shape. wily 1 -Austin
wily Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 that scares me if you think I should bail on it....you’re like macgyver with that old boat motor you’ve been working on...the predator idea is good worst case idea I’m going to keep dinking with it...thanks to everyone with the tips for the carb. I’ll try to pull it apart. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
tho1mas Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 While you have the carb apart you might as well put a kit in it. They do not cost much & may be the answer except for the spark problem. wily 1
wily Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 I got the 3 screws out of the top...and breather tube off...but can’t figure out how to pull the carb out. I took the top screw out of the what I guess is the manifold but can’t get to the bottom one so I don’t think that’s right...I put it back in. The tank wiggles a little now...but can’t see where it bolts on at the bottom Its like painting by numbers with me...im not good at this stuff
