vernon Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 One of the nicest guys I ever met. Really hate to see so many of the legends that I looked up to when I was young leaving this world. I honestly think it's harder to see others grow old and pass than it is to grow old myself........😢 magicwormman, dtrs5kprs, big c and 1 other 4 "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." vernon Posted April 21, 2020 Posted April 21, 2020 I'd kinda forgotten but this reminded of a couple of times that my dad and me ran into him while working down a bank at Table Rock up around Cape Fair. It was the late 70's and early 80's and he was always throwing either the Spook or a spinnerbait it seemed. Every time, he would talk to us like he'd know us forever and tell everything he could about where and what we needed to do to catch 'em. Dad didn't know who he was and one time said, "That guy is either lyin' or nuts." I tried to explain to him that Charlie was a fishing legend and worked with Bass Pro designing lures and boats. Needless to say, dad wasn't easily impressed and still couldn't have cared less but I felt like I'd just met Mickey Mantle! Of course dad didn't give a hoot about Mickey Mantle either...... dtrs5kprs, magicwormman, mixermarkb and 2 others 5 "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." It's finally starting to make sense to me! A bad childhood can really mess people up! Who could possibly not LOVE Charlie! vernon 1
MOPanfisher Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 When I started working at BPS in xolege I got to know Charlie just a little bit and old Jack Emmit who managed the Fishing a little bit. Me and another guy who knew nothing about it were talking about going to Taneycomo trout fishing, Charlie happened to be there. He promptly stopped and explained where to go, hiw ro get there, what to use and some tips on being safe as we had a very small boat. Super super nice guy and we hammered the trout, was my first time trout fishing ever. vernon and magicwormman 2
Dock-in-it Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 I purchased two G.Loomis pistol grips rods decades ago and still have them. I believe that I was I influenced by a Charlie Campbell article about using pistol grip rods for accuracy when throwing a spook around brush or timber. I grew up in Northwest Florida fishing rivers that dumped into the bays. A short handle rod was very helpful while sitting down in the back of a wooden river boat and sculling with one arm and casting under low hanging trees with the other. Who could possibly not LOVE Charlie! Well, by today's standards I definitely WAS abused! For the day, however, not so much. To provide a little context I'm pretty sure that dad's only heroes were Archie Bunker and Al Bundy. Well, and maybe Granny. To say he was a little "cynical" would be a bit of an understatement! dtrs5kprs, MOPanfisher, mixermarkb and 1 other 4 "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." mixermarkb Posted April 23, 2020 Posted April 23, 2020 Not to understate Mr Morris's business skills, but love him or hate him, he owes gentlemen like Charlie Campbell, Stacey King, Dave Barker, and several others a debt he won't ever be able to repay. Be it an eye for talent, or just dumb luck, he sure found several great ambassadors for the BPS brand, right here in the ozarks. Charlie will be missed. We should all tie on a Christmas Tree spook, take a moment of silence, and throw it at a cedar in remembrance. vernon, dtrs5kprs, Dock-in-it and 1 other 4
